Christoph Heinrich Binder (born June 18, 1951 in Graz ) is an Austrian librarian .

life and career

Christoph Binder was born on June 18, 1951 in Graz. After graduating from the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium in Graz in 1969, he began to study German and classical philology at the University of Graz . He financed his studies through scholarships, as well as his activities as a tutor, contract teacher and employee of the Hammer-Purgstall-Gesellschaft . On March 31, 1977 he received his doctorate in philosophy and, while still a student, joined the AV Winfridia Graz , a non-colored and non-striking student association. One or two years before graduating, he joined the Styrian State Library in 1975 or 1976 and worked his way up from contract employee to secretary of the 1976 State Exhibition "Literature in Styria" within a very short time . He then worked from 1977 to 1982 as a magistrate of the City of Vienna in the management of the Wiener Städtische Libraries , before he returned to his hometown and returned to the service of the Styrian State Library. After he was promoted to deputy director in 1993, he headed the Styrian State Library as director from 2003. The complete redesign of the state library, which was reopened in 2012, also fell under his term of office. After Binder retired at the end of 2013, Katharina Kocher-Lichem succeeded him as head of the Styrian State Library.

In addition to his work at the library, Binder, who has been married to his wife Ruth (née Tillich) since 1983 and has two sons, also worked as a lecturer at the Federal Vocational Education Academy in Graz from 1990 to 1998 for language and speech training . In addition, he was also a lecturer in the St. Martin educational center , where he entrusted his own series of lectures with the title “Literature in the Castle” and in this function gave countless lectures and introductions to author readings. In addition, from 1990 to 1999, Binder was a member of the jury for the award of the Styrian Literature Prize . During his activity, he was sometimes awarded the honorary title of councilor . Binder was also chairman of the Otto Stoessl Foundation , which has been awarding the Otto Stoessl Prize every two years since 1982 , as well as chairing the Grazer Theatergemeinschaft Foundation and chairing the Christian Schölnast Volks- und Heimatkundeprivatstiftung . In addition, the member of the Austrian PEN Club, the Kiwanis Club Graz and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Austria Forum Alter was the master of several Catholic student associations in the Middle Schools Cartel Association (MKV) and the Cartel Association of Catholic Non-Colored Academic Associations in Austria (ÖKV). By invitation of the then chairman of the Odilien-Blindeninstitut in Graz, Franz Fink, and a personal concern, blindness or severe visual impairment of next of kin, Binder acted from January 1994 as curator of the Odilien-Institut. In 2002 he was promoted to deputy chairman and has been honorary chairman of the institution since May 2008.
