Christoph G. Paulus
Christoph Georg Paulus (born September 21, 1952 in Sande ) was full professor for civil law , civil litigation and insolvency law as well as Roman law at the Law Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin , director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Restructuring (iir) e. V. and repeatedly advisor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank .
Life
Paul is the son of the jurist Gotthard Paulus , considered to 1976 Professor of Civil Law and the Civil Procedure Law at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University taught. In the same place studied Paul 1973-1977 law , spent his training period from 1978 to 1980 in the Higher Regional Court of Munich and in 1981 with the thesis Judiciary disposal ban and flag in bankruptcy Dr. jur. PhD. At the University of California at Berkeley, he obtained the academic degree of Master of Laws in 1983/1984 , and he completed his habilitation at LMU in 1991 with the thesis The Idea of the Postmortem Personality in Roman Testament Law - on the Legal and Social Significance of Individual Testamentary Clauses .
From 1990 to 1993 Paulus represented several full professorships for civil law and civil procedural law at the universities of Berlin ( Technical University ), Heidelberg and Saarbrücken .
Paulus was appointed associate professor for civil law and civil procedural law at the University of Augsburg in 1992 , moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1994 and taught there until the 2018/2019 winter semester as a full professor of civil law, civil procedural law, insolvency law and Roman law.
Between 2004 and 2008 he was Dean of International Programs and from 2008 to 2010 Dean of the Law Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin .
Consulting activities
In 1998 Paul was an advisor to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC , where he worked on basic principles and legislative guidelines for bankruptcy proceedings. For the IMF , he was also involved as a consultant in the work on insolvency proceedings for states (Sovereign Debt Restructuring Mechanism = SDRM). He has also reviewed the bankruptcy laws of several transition countries for the IMF .
In 2006 Paulus was again active as an advisor to the World Bank in Washington, DC , where he worked on various bankruptcy law issues.
Paulus has also been an advisor to the German delegation since 2006 during the UNCITRAL meetings in New York and Vienna on the occasion of the development of corporate insolvency law (until 2011).
Other professional activities
On the occasion of the annual meeting of the Association of Insolvency Experts INSOL Europe in Paris, Paulus was appointed Chair of the Academic Forum on September 26, 2013. It was this until the 2016 annual meeting in Cascais .
Paulus was a visiting professor at various universities: Brooklyn Law School in New York / USA , Università commerciale Luigi "Bocconi" in Milan / Italy , University of the Western Cape in Cape Town / South Africa , Izmir University of Economics in Turkey , University of Sydney in Australia , Lomonossov University Moscow and the Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris (II) / France . He is also a member of the external teaching staff of the MBL ( Master of Business Law ) program at the University of St. Gallen / Switzerland .
Paul is on the editorial board of the magazines ZIP ( magazine for business law ); Norton Annual Review of International Insolvency; IILR (International Insolvency Law Review); Law and Economics Yearly Review ; RIW ( Law of the International Economy ).
Paulus has been Associate Member of South Square , London, since December 2018, and Of Counsel at the law firm White & Case , Berlin , since September 1, 2019 .
Awards
From 1989 to 1990 Paulus was a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Berkeley , California ( USA ). In 1993 he was awarded the medal of the University of Paris II for his habilitation thesis as part of the international Gerard Boulvert competition.
