Christoph Gottlieb Nicolai

Christoph Gottlieb Nicolai (* 1682 in Frankfurt / Oder ; † February 18, 1752 in Berlin ) was a German publisher and bookseller in Berlin. He founded the Nicolaische Verlagsbuchhandlung.

Life

Nicolai was an assistant ( clerk ) at the bookseller Gottfried Zimmermann in Wittenberg . In 1713 he got his branch bookstore in Berlin on Heilig-Geist-Straße and opened a publishing house there in the same year. On May 3rd, he was granted the royal privilege for it.

Nicolai became a successful publisher. Among other things, he published Germanic works and school books. Christoph Gottlieb Nicolai was a strict, economical and pious man who corresponded to the Calvinist moral ideas of his time.

He was married to Maria Justine Zimmermann, the daughter of the Wittenberg publisher. His sons succeeded him

  • Gottfried Wilhelm Nicolai († 1759), ran the publishing bookstore until his early death
  • Thank God Samuel Nicolai
  • Friedrich Nicolai (1733–1811) was one of the most important enlighteners in Berlin and led the publishing house to great importance.
