Christoph Handschin (born February 20, 1973 in Basel ) is a Swiss cell biologist and professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel .

Life

Christoph Handschin studied biology at the University of Basel. He then did his doctorate in the group of Urs A. Meyer in the field of biochemistry at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. Between 2002 and 2006 Christoph Handschin conducted research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard Medical School in Boston , USA, before he was appointed Assistant Professor of Physiology and SNSF Professor at the University of Zurich in 2006 . In 2009 Christoph Handschin returned to the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, where he has been researching and teaching as Professor of Pharmacology ever since .

Act

Christoph Handschin researches the molecular processes that underlie trained or diseased muscles . The focus of his research is the protein PGC-1α , which has a significant influence on metabolism and muscle function. Christoph Handschin was able to prove that PGC-1 α centrally controls the adaptation mechanisms of the muscle during endurance training. PGC-1α increases the endurance of the muscle by regulating the formation and breakdown of lactate , among other things . Handschin also found that increased PGC-1α production has a therapeutic effect on muscle wasting and dystrophy . His results provide concrete approaches for the therapy of muscle diseases or age-related muscle wasting.
