Urs A. Meyer
Urs Albert Meyer (born July 7, 1938 in Baden ) is a Swiss clinical pharmacologist .
Life
Urs A. Meyer received his doctorate in 1967 at the University of Zurich Dr. med. and then worked at the University of California, San Francisco . In 1974 he took over the management of the clinical pharmacology department at the University Hospital Zurich . From 1983 until his retirement in 2008, Meyer researched and taught as a professor of pharmacology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel and was chairman of the institution for two years . He also held various functions at the WHO and the NIH and was President of the clinical section of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Act
Urs A. Meyer conducted research in the field of pharmacogenetics and personalized medicine and examined the influence of environmental and genetic factors on the effects of drugs . Meyer discovered defects in the enzymes of haem biosynthesis as the cause of porphyrias and how drugs trigger acute porphyrias . He was the first to identify gene variants in the enzymes of the cytochrome P450 system and showed that such polymorphisms are responsible for different drug effects. The gene variants of the N- acetyltransferases were also discovered in his laboratory. Meyer was also able to explain how drugs activate transcription factors such as nuclear receptors and thereby regulate the expression of metabolizing enzymes and drug transporters .
