Christoph Hochreutiner (also Christoph von Hochreut ; * August 22, 1662 in St. Gallen ; † November 12, 1742 ibid) was a mayor of St. Gallen ( Switzerland ) and delegate to the daily statute.

Life

Christoph Hochreutiner was born as the son of Daniel Hochreutiner.

He studied at the University of Duisburg Law and received in 1682 the Dr. iur. with the dissertation De servitute . He then went on a journey through France and Italy as court master with young noblemen , from which he returned to St. Gallen in 1685. On March 13, 1685, he submitted a report to the magistrate on this trip and received 250 Florentines in return, because it was the custom at the time for students who went to a university or on trips to receive advance travel money or a remuneration on their return received.

1683 he was Kanzleiadjunkt in St. Gallen, 1698 litigation and the following year, town clerk and councilor and Obervogt of Bürglen .

On December 1, 1717, he was elected mayor as the successor to Heinrich Hiller (1633-1719), who had asked for his dismissal due to his age, and exercised this office every three years as Reichsvogt, mayor and former mayor of St. Gallen from 1717 to 1719 alternating with Lorenz Werder and Georg Wartmann and then with Jacob Züblin , David Stähelin and Hans Jacob Rietmann until 1740, his last re-election in 1742. During this time he drafted the revised court and inheritance statutes in 1725.

He also represented St. Gallen on several occasions in the Federal Diet and was occasionally used as a diplomatic mediator in disputes. So he was given the delegation that asked the Appenzell district administrator for help during the War of the Cross . He was also delegated to Zurich on January 2, 1703, together with councilor Sebastian Kunz , in order to settle a dispute against St. Gallen with the imperial ambassador, Count Franz Ehrenreich von Trauttmannsdorff (1662–1719). In 1712 he took part in the peace negotiations between the disputes between the federal estates and the Prince Abbot of St. Gallen, Leodegar Bürgisser , in the Toggenburg War. In 1724 he mediated a dispute between Prince Abbot Joseph von Rudolphi and the community of Jonschwil , for which he, at their request, worked.

Christoph Hochreutiner was married to Sabina (* unknown; † December 27, 1737), daughter of Peter Zollikofer von Altenklingen , since August 3, 1686 ; together they had a son and a daughter:

  • Georg Leonhard Hochreutiner (also Georg Leonhard Horutener ) (* 1687; † 1754), merchant in Rouen
  • Wibratha Hochreutiner (* 1699; † unknown), married first to Sebastian Högger and second to Wilhelm Heinrich Hug from Zurich, later to a councilor in Hanau .

Memberships

Christoph Hochreutiner was accepted as a member of the Collegium theologicum in 1686, in which philosophical and theological subjects were dealt with in disputational form; this college was founded in 1657 by pastor Bartholomäus Wegelin (1621–1684).

He was a member of the St. Galler Gesellschaft zum Notenstein (originally a community of the nobility, to which, however, dignitaries from the bourgeoisie were later granted access).
