Sculpture for the State Insurance Company Speyer (2003)

Mancke uses various materials for his abstract works, but mainly COR-TEN steel and stone. Often they are a contrapuntal composition of both, for example at the Großer Winkel for the International Sculpture Symposium Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler 2002.

A recurring theme in his work is "playing with balance". "By tilting the pieces from the vertical and at the same time catching the falling movement with counterweights, Mancke creates complicated balancing acts." [Brigitta Amalia Gonser, 2010]

Mancke prefers to choose special places in nature and landscape for his sculptures, often on rivers or estuaries (e.g. confluence of the Saar into the Moselle, the Moselle into the Rhine or the Prüm into the Sauer).

Mancke created an extraordinary piece of work in 2011 for the summit of the highest mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Erbeskopf in the Hunsrück. The 16.50 m high sculpture Windklang - an abstract symbol in the room - is a landmark, a walkable vantage point and an art object in one. Located at the end of a visual axis, it leads the visitor to the summit, directs his gaze into the distance and prompts him to pause.

Another major work by Mancke is his Labyrinth of Stones (1998), stone setting from blocks of up to 30 t heavy sandstone from Udelfang in the former shooting walls on Cracauer Anger (today: Elbauenpark ), Magdeburg. With the help of the presence of the mass of stones, the installation creates a place of calm and contemplation. The monumental stone blocks partially block the view and thereby emphasize the visual axes. There you create accessible interior spaces or encourage people to walk around and thus draw attention to their own perception. The installation was created on the occasion of the Federal Horticultural Show in Magdeburg in 1999 in collaboration with the landscape architects Ernst, Heckel & Lohrer, Magdeburg, and the architect Michael R. Schwarz, Trier, based on the award-winning designs for a landscape architecture competition from 1993.

Many of Mancke's often large-format works go back to public tenders that he won, such as his work at the (former) state representation of Rhineland-Palatinate in Bonn, at the Nazi memorial in Hinzert , in front of the state insurance institute in Speyer or at the state geological office Rhineland-Palatinate in Mainz.
