Christoph Peucker (* 1662 in Königsberg ; † 1735 in Rößel ), also Peukert , Peickert , Preike and Peichert , was a German sculptor and cabinet maker who worked in East Prussia .

Life

Peucker was probably born in Konigsberg; according to other sources he came from Silesia . Little is known about his life. He was initially of the Protestant denomination, but converted to the Catholic faith with his family before 1711 . It is very likely that he completed his training with the sculptor Johann Christoph Döbel , where he was "foreman" and "first assistant". He acknowledged partial payments that he had received for work in Heilige Linde with the addition “within the framework of my principal as a person in power”, which suggests that he belonged to Döbel's workshop. He lived and worked as a sculptor in Königsberg. From 1699 he is proven there; in the contract for the manufacture of the pulpit in Heilige Linde, Peucker is referred to as a "carpenter in Königsberg". Peucker probably came into contact with the Jesuits in Heilige Linde through his teacher Döbel. Peucker's work in Döbel's workshop resulted in further orders for him in Heilige Linde. His ministry in Heilige Linde spanned a period of approximately twenty years. From his catalog raisonné it can be seen that Peucker later devoted himself mainly to carpentry work and that his activity as a sculptor took a back seat. Between 1711 and 1715 he moved to Rößel , where he was hired by the prince-bishop in Heilsberg before 1724 and appointed "state surveyor".

His earliest documented work is the pulpit for the Jesuit church in Heilige Linde from 1699/1700, which Peucker carved from French walnut wood. The pulpit was started at the end of 1699 and erected in August 1700. The high altar for the Jesuit church in Heilige Linde (1714) is one of his main works. In 1734 Peucker submitted his draft for the choir stalls of the Frauenburg Cathedral , which was approved by the cathedral chapter that same year. Peucker directed the work until his death. The job was then left to Peucker's widow, who commissioned her foreman and journeyman Christoph Sand (Sandt) from Rößel with it. The choir stalls were completed and installed in 1738. The last work Peucker completed himself was the high altar of the Franciscan Church in Cadinen , which was completed at the end of 1735, shortly before Peucker's death. The high altar was a foundation by Peucker for the "poorly" equipped church in Cadinen, with which he wanted to fulfill a given religious vow.

Peucker's proven creative period thus extends from the end of 1699 to shortly before his death in 1735. According to Ulbrich , Peucker probably worked in the entire Catholic Warmia during this period .

In art history literature, an identity between Peucker and a sculptor “Preike” from Braunsberg is sometimes assumed to be possible. This applies in particular to the attribution of the high altar, some side altars and the pulpit in the pilgrimage church of the Visitation in Krossen to Peucker.
