Christoph Rolle

Christoph Rolle (born January 4, 1806 in Lausen ; † August 25, 1870 there ; entitled to live there ) was a Swiss politician and pioneer of direct democracy in the canton of Basel-Landschaft .

Life

Rolle was trained as a teacher by pastor Johann Jakob Bischoff in Muttenz . There he took over the management of the school with 160 children in 1827, but lost this position again in 1831 because he had participated in the uprising of the rural workers against the city of Basel in January . In the newly founded rural canton he worked as a teacher in Liestal until 1843 , and in 1837 as an education councilor . He then opened a business for money brokerage , debt collection and wine trading in Lausen .

Politically, Rolle joined the opposition movement party; In 1833 he was a board member of the "Patriotic Association". In 1839 he supported a foreign petition against political refugees , in 1847 he sat on the board of the people's association for the support of the federal state . In the 1850s Rolle was one of the leaders of the "Chnorzi" who wanted to oblige the canton to be absolutely thrifty . From 1854 to 1858 he was the district administrator of Basel .

In the following years he collected numerous dissatisfied people in the so-called Revi-Movement (Revisionsverein), which after the “never resolution” of the district administrator for reunification with the city of Basel in 1861 finally implemented a direct-democratic constitutional revision through the Basel-Landschaft in 1862/1863 Swiss canton received the mandatory legal referendum. As a government councilor , Rolle led such a strong party regiment from 1863 to 1866 that the Federal Council had to intervene several times.

As part among paranoia suffered, he violated the Bärenwirt in Lausen 1865 with a knife fatal. He was one of the founders of the Volksblatt from Baselland in 1861, the Basellandschaftliche Kantonalbank in 1864 and the newspaper Der Demokratie from Baselland in 1866.
