Christopher Patrick Parnell, 8th Baron Congleton (born March 11, 1930 - December 11, 2015 ) was a British peer and politician ( Crossbencher ).

life and career

Christopher Patrick Parnell, 8th Baron Congleton was born to John Brooke Molesworth Parnell, 6th Baron Congleton (1892-1932) and his wife Edith Mary Palmer Howard (1895-1979). On 12 October 1967 he inherited from his older brother William Jared Parnell, 7th Baron Congleton (1925-1967), who died in a car accident, the title of the 8th Baron Congleton , of Congleton, in the County of Chester ( Peerage of the United Kingdom ; 1841) and the associated title of 11th Baronet Parnell, of Rathleague ( Peerage of Ireland , Queen's College, 1766).

He attended Eton College in Berkshire . He graduated from New College at Oxford University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). In 1987 he also obtained his Master of Arts (MA) there.

Parnell's political career began in local politics . From 1964 to 1974 he was a member of the District Council for Salisbury and Wilton (Salisbury and Wilton Rural District Council). The Southampton University awarded him in 1990 a honorary doctorate of rights (Honorary degree of Doctor of Law; LL.D.).

Parnell ran two large farms as a landowner and landowner, one in Dorset and another in Wiltshire . He lived on his West End Lodge estate, Ebbesbourne Wake, in the county of Wiltshire.

Membership in the House of Lords

After his brother's death in October 1967, Parnell inherited the title of Baron Congleton and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He had been a formal member of the House of Lords since October 12, 1967. He was a crossbencher in the House of Lords. Parnell has been a regular and active member of the House of Lords since 1969. In the Hansard , a total of more than 20 verbal contributions from 1969 to 1999 are documented. He gave his inaugural address on April 16, 1969 in the context of a debate on agriculture and price policy in agriculture.

In the 1997/98 session he was present on 41 days. On May 26, 1999, he spoke for the last time in a debate on regional museums and art galleries in Great Britain .

He was a member of the House of Lords until November 11, 1999. Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Private

Parnell was married. On November 19, 1955, he married the Norwegian Anna Hedvig ("Hedi") Sommerfelt from Oslo , the daughter of Gustav Adolf Sommerfelt. The marriage, which lasted more than 60 years, resulted in five children, two sons and three daughters. Parnell died "peacefully" on his estate at the age of 85. The title of 9th Baron Congleton went to his eldest son, John Patrick Christian Parnell (* 1959). On February 3, 2016, the memorial service for Parnell was held in Salisbury Cathedral .
