Christopher Ross (sculptor)

Christopher Ross (* 1931 in New York ) is an American designer and collector of militaria . Ross' animal sculptures made of 24k gold became famous and are mainly used as accessories in the luxury fashion sector .

Life

Christopher Ross was born in 1931, the son of Captain Gustave Ross and grandson of Justice William P. Burr, Supreme Court Justice , on the Upper East Side of New York and grew up there. He went to school at Fairfield Country Day School in Fairfield and Westport, Connecticut. He then attended the Marie-José School in Gstaad, Switzerland for several years. Ross graduated from Millbrook School with Edward Pulling as a mentor and then graduated from College (Collegiate School) in New York City.

Ross studied history and philosophy at Columbia University in New York. From 1955 to 1976, Ross was a partner in Brooks Harvey, which was then bought by Morgan Stanley . He then worked as a partner of Harry Helmsley . They founded a company together in 1969. As an investment banker he went to South America for two years and represented the interests of the Southern Railroad, Venezuela, while his sister Sheilah Ross worked as a photo and cover model for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in New York. Ross returned to the United States in the mid-1970s and devoted himself to sculpting and collecting selected European collectibles from the Waterloo period to 1914.

Over the years of his artistic creation, Ross has received awards such as the A'Design Award. In 2016 he was elected an Honorable Life Fellow (FRSA) by the Royal Society of Arts London. In the same year Ross was nominated for the German Design Award in Frankfurt.

Christopher Ross is known for his luxurious animal sculptures made of 24 carat gold, gold-plated silver and glass stones, which are used as jewelry, often as exclusive belt buckles in fashion photography or in film. His work has been featured in fashion magazines such as Vogue , L'Officiel, Madame , Elle France , Harper's Bazaar and on the covers of Marie Claire and Malaysia Tatler. Some of his jewelry pieces have been exhibited in fashion shows, most recently at Fendi ’s Limited Edition Experiences, at Art Basel in Miami Beach in 2009, Vendôme Luxury Paris in 2010 and at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh in 2016. His work was shown by American fashion designer Rachel Roy in her Fall / Winter Digital Runway Show 2013/2014 in New York City.
