Christophore Cosandey

Christophore Cosandey (born December 6, 1818 in St. Silvester ; † October 1, 1882 in Freiburg ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Lausanne .

Life

Christophore Cosandey was the son of the farmer Jacques Cosandey and his wife Catherine, b. Zosso. He studied 1832-1835 at St. Michael's College in Freiburg and 1835-1843 at the German College in Rome, where he in 1838 as a doctor of philosophy and 1842. Dr. theol. received his doctorate . He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1841. He was initially coadjutor, then from 1843 canon at St. Niklaus Abbey in Freiburg. From 1858 to 1879 he taught pastoral theology , exegesis , moral theology and canon law as superior of the seminary . During the First Vatican Council he was a consultor to the Disciplinary Commission.

With the support of the Freiburg head of government Louis de Weck and the conservative majority of the clergy, Christophore Cosandey was appointed Bishop of Lausanne on December 19, 1879. The episcopal ordination donated him on February 15, 1880 Edward Henry Cardinal Howard of Norfolk in Rome; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Basel , Eugène Lachat CPPS and William Joseph Hugh Clifford , Bishop of Clifton .

During his brief episcopate, while Christophore Cosandey sought to restore unity within the clergy, he essentially strengthened the conservative ultramontane wing.
