Edward Henry Howard

Edward Henry Howard of Norfolk (born February 13, 1829 in Hainton zu Nottingham , Great Britain , † September 16, 1892 in Hatch Beauchamp , Brighton , Great Britain ) was a Roman Catholic Bishop and Cardinal Bishop of Frascati , Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica , Cardinal Priest and Titular Archbishop .
Life
Edward Henry Howard was born in the central English city of Nottingham in 1829 . Howard came from the traditional Roman Catholic noble family of the Norfolk . The study of theology graduated from Howard in the Episcopal Seminary Oscott College of the Diocese of Birmingham . He took further courses in Scotland , at the University of Edinburgh .
In Italy Howard received on 8 December 1854 at the age of 25, in Rome , the ordination . In the same year he continued his ecclesiastical training in the English seminary Collegium Anglorum , the Papal Gregorian University and at the Papal Diplomatic Academy until 1858. Howard received his doctorate in Canon Law and Catholic Theology . Because of his existing knowledge of six foreign languages, Howard had the desire to serve as a missionary for the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Pius IX however, decided that Howard should remain in Rome and in 1863 appointed him Honorary Prelate to His Holiness .
Howard was pastorally responsible for the poor and soldiers in Rome. As a young man, Howard himself did his military service in the Second Regiment of the British Life Guards . Edward Henry Howard worked diplomatically in Goa , India , where he mediated between the British and Portuguese governments regarding open disputes in canonical matters. On June 22, 1872, Edward Henry Howard was appointed auxiliary bishop in Frascati and titular archbishop of Neocaesarea in Ponto . He was ordained bishop on June 30, 1872 in Rome by Cardinal Carlo Sacconi as main consecrator , with Cardinal Salvatore Nobili Vitelleschi and Archbishop Frédéric-François-Xavier Ghislain de Mérode serving as co- consecrators . The elevation of Howard to cardinal took place in the consistory of March 12, 1877. As a cardinal priest he was assigned the titular church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo .
At the age of 52, Edward Henry Cardinal Howard was appointed Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica on December 12, 1881 . Three years later he was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Frascati. Edward Henry Howard participated in the conclave for the election of Pope Leo XIII. part. In 1887 Cardinal Howard fell seriously ill; in the same year he founded the Canadian Pontifical College in Rome . In 1888 he returned to England and spent the last years of his life in seclusion in the English town of Hatch Beauchamp , where he died on September 16, 1892. He was buried in the village of Arundel in West Sussex in the local Fitzalan Chapel in the family grave of the Dukes of Norfolk .
