history

Old bath house built by Heinrich Schickhardt

The first written mention comes from the year 1404 as "Swalbrunnen zu Geppingen". Around 1550, Duke Christoph von Württemberg made frequent bathing trips . Between 1616 and 1618 the bath house was rebuilt by Heinrich Schickhardt . In 1625 the spa had a prominent spa guest, Johannes Kepler .

Heinrich Landerer and Palm acquired the Göppinger Bad in 1839. Thirteen years later they founded the “private sanatorium and nursing home for the mentally ill and nervous” in collaboration with Gustav Jung. In 1859 an "agricultural colony" was founded on the Freihof with 60 places. Six years later there was an obligation to accept 250 “state nurses”. In 1874 the institution accommodated 394 patients. In the meantime it was a sanatorium, mineral fountain and farm. Heinrich Landerer died on February 8, 1877. Thirteen years later, his sons Gustav , Richard and Heinrich succeeded their parents in the “private insane asylum”.

After the state welfare patients were handed over as a result of inflation and the economic crisis after the First World War , the institution only housed 68 private patients in 1924. This number skyrocketed in the following years to 530 patients in 1930.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the time of National Socialism, patients were murdered as part of euthanasia . On September 19, 1940, the Württemberg Ministry of the Interior in Stuttgart wrote to the state sanatoriums in Weinsberg and Weißenau : “The Göppingen sanatorium had not yet completed any registration forms for the sick who were transferred to Weinsberg and Weissenau, which should be done immediately. The registration forms are to be submitted to me by October 1st, 1940 at the latest for forwarding to the Reich Minister of the Interior. "

The following transports of 297 patients are known at later transfers:

  • April 17, 1940: 40 female patients according to Weinsberg;
  • June 21, 1940: 75 female patients according to Weinsberg;
  • June 24, 1940: 75 male patients to Weissenau;
  • October 14, 1940: 75 male patients after Winnenden;
  • March 27, 1941: 32 patients to Weinsberg.

137 of these patients were murdered in Grafeneck, 31 in Hadamar.
