Life, work
The musician, who was born in Vienna-Floridsdorf , made his first appearances in the late 1970s in the Austrian New Wave and Punk era. At the beginning of the 1980s he founded the formation Radical Chic , a live act band , together with Hans Holler , "his lifelong artistic partner" (ORF), and with Thomas Mießgang . He was also active in the groups Out of Breath and The Nerves . At that time he set up a studio together with Holler, Audiorama, and began to work as a producer.
In 1985 he founded the retro soul band Soul Finger , then in the early 1990s - with Holler, the singer Leena Conquest and the free jazz saxophonist Walter "Muhammad" Malli - the group Hip Hop Finger . This band, produced by Werner Geier (1962-2007), had their greatest success with the track Boundaries , an anti-racist statement, an international club hit in 1993. The band also played live, for example at the 1992 confrontations in Nickelsdorf. In the 1990s, the artist was involved in the retro-futuristic project Musikkreis MS 20, which wanted to explore the possibilities of the analog synthesizer in the context of pop and experimental music. As a producer he helped Austrian underground formations - for example Asteron and Ronnie Urini , as well as the dark duo Modell D'oo.
From 1994 to 1996 Chrono Popp was the musical designer of Phettberg's Netter Leit Show with Hermes Phettberg as the presenter. 19 of the 24 episodes were recorded and broadcast by ORF . The project achieved cult status, also because of the performances by the Poulard brothers - "Bon Soir" with Chrono Popp as guitarist. In addition, he was responsible for the soundtrack of several films and documentaries. With his partner Hans Holler, he set a series of silent films to music for the Filmarchiv Austria . These tracks were presented partly live and partly pre-produced at a Vienna open-air cinema festival. From 2002 a band called Chrono Popps Superbett is handed down with the title Together Forever in everyday life and state . Another new company was founded in the late noughties. He created Chrono Popp & The Sorry Babies with Hans Holler, Andreas Karner and Thomas Mießgang . In 2012 the album "Sex The Nation" was released by monkey records. This combo was known as Austro-Funk, an eclectic mix of soul , latin and ska . "In addition, gloved ladies do a lot of pushing."
Furthermore, he was the winner of the competition "Art project for the new hospital in Meran" , a panorama camera was installed on the roof of the hospital. Together with Eva Wohlgemuth he created a computer animation as a stage design for the National Theater Weimar .
Even during his lifetime, the press described him as a "guitar half-god", the Kurier posthumously as a "sound artist", the ORF as a Viennese music legend .
On July 4, 2020, he died of cancer.
