Chuck Willis

Harold "Chuck" Willis (* 31 January 1928 in Atlanta , Georgia ; † 10. April 1958 ) was an American blues - and rhythm-and-blues - singer and songwriter .

Willis first sang with a few local bands before signing a deal with Columbia Records in 1951 . He had his first successes in the R&B charts with the cover versions of Fats Dominos Goin 'to the River . He wrote the original I Feel So Bad , which was a hit with Elvis Presley in 1961 . He himself reached number 8 on the R&B charts in 1954. From 1956, Willis published on Atlantic Records . In 1957 his most successful recording took place, a cover by Gertrude "Ma" Rainey's C. C. Rider , which reached number one on the R&B and number twelve on the pop charts. In 1958 he died of peritonitis at the age of 30.

His version of the song CC Rider was inducted by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame into the list of the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll . Many bands later covered his songs, including The Band , Charlie Rich , Otis Redding , Buddy Holly , Roy Orbison and Derek and the Dominos .
