The Churachandpur District is a district in the Indian state of Manipur . The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Churachandpur .
geography
The district of Churachandpur is located in the south of Manipur on the border with Myanmar . Neighboring districts are Noney in the northwest and north, Senapati in the northeast, Bishnupur and Chandel in the east and Pherzawl in the west. In the south the district borders on the state of Myanmar and in the southwest on the state of Mizoram . The Churachandpur District is divided into five sub-divisions: Chakpikarong, Chandel, Khengjoy, Machi and Tengnoupal.
The area of the district of Churachandpur is 4570 square kilometers. The district is a highland with numerous hills.
history
In the late 19th century, the British conquered the area and the area became part of Manipur within Bengal. During World War II it was close to the front line between the British and the Japanese. After Indian independence, Manipur joined India in 1949. Until 1983, today's district was called Manipur South as a sub-division . A small part of the area was ceded to the Bishnupur district (0.21 percent of its area) in 1983 . On December 6, 2016, the western part of the district was separated. The new Pherzawl district emerged from this .
population
According to the 2011 census, the Churachandpur district has a population of 274,143. With 60 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is only sparsely populated. The district is clearly rural.
The Churachandpur district is one of the areas of Manipur that are mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They include (2011) 254,787 people (92.7 percent of the district's population). The largest groups are the Thadou , Paite and Hmar . The Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered 443 people in 2011 (0.16 percent of the district's population).
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the Churachandpur district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was around 20 percent (20.29%). In these ten years the population increased by more than 46,000 people. The following table shows the exact numbers:
Significant places
There are only two settlements in the district with more than 5000 residents. The urban population makes up only 6.8 percent of the total population.
District population by gender
As in many parts of India, the percentage of the female population has decreased at times over the past few decades. Nevertheless, the fluctuations within the sexes for Indian standards - with the exception of 1991 - are within a medium range (proportion of women between 48.15 and 51.18% since independence).

Almost the entire population of the Churachandpur District speaks Tibetan-Burmese languages . Less than 3 percent of the population - mostly immigrants from other regions - speak a different language. Most commonly spoken of these languages are Hindi, Bengali and Nepali.

Population of the district by confession
Today the majority of the residents profess Christianity. Since India's independence, almost all tribesmen ( scheduled tribes ) converted to Christianity. The Baptists are particularly numerous (Manipur Baptist Convention; at the end of 2015 1303 parishes with 196,217 members). The only significant religious minority are the Hindus with around 4.4 percent of the population. The approximately 2,900 Muslims form a smaller minority. education
Despite significant efforts, the goal of full literacy has not yet been fully achieved. Nevertheless, the district is one of the Indian areas with high literacy. This has shown huge advances in the last few decades. The following table shows the development:
