Chuspipata is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Chuspipata is a village in the canton of Coroico in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Coroico in the province of Nor Yungas . The municipality is located at an altitude of 2996  m on a ridge above the Río Elena, which joins the Río Huarinilla to the Río Coroico a few kilometers downstream at the village of Huarinilla .

Chuspipata located on the eastern edge of the Cordillera Real on the edge of the Yungas region, the transition between the highlands of the Andes ( Altiplano ) and the tropical lowlands of the Amazon - Rainforest forms. The climate at this altitude is a typical daytime climate , in which the mean temperature fluctuations during the day are more pronounced than during the year.

Transport network

Chuspipata is located 56 kilometers by road northeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved road Ruta 3 leads via Cotapata to Coroico and another 515 kilometers to Trinidad on the Río Mamoré . The old connection between La Paz and Coroico via Cotapata and Chuspipata is called "Road of Death" ( Ruta de la muerte ), mainly because of the enormous difference in altitude between valley and mountain and in particular because of the many traffic fatalities that accidents on this unpaved road every year. The old route is described in many travel guides as the "deadliest road in the world" and attracts tourists in this regard; Among other things, there are guided mountain bike tours on it. In the meantime, a well-developed road has been completed in a new route that leaves the old route between Cotapata and Chuspipata in a northerly direction.
