Joseph "Joe" Cirella (born May 9, 1963 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the Colorado Rockies , New Jersey Devils , Québec Nordiques , New York from 1980 to 1997 Rangers , Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League and the Kölner Haie in the German Ice Hockey League .

Career

Joe Cirella began his career as a hockey player with the Oshawa Generals , for whom he was active from 1980 to 1983 in the Ontario Hockey League . During this time he was selected in the first round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft as the fifth player overall by the Colorado Rockies , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1981/82 season . In his rookie year , the defender scored a total of 19 points in 65 games, including seven goals. In the following season he won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Oshawa Generals as an OHL champion. In the summer of 1982, the New Jersey Devils , who replaced the Colorado Rockies after their relocation, received the rights to the player. For the Devils, Cirella played in the following seven seasons in the NHL, before he was given in June 1989 to the Québec Nordiques , for which he played a year and a half before he was on January 17, 1991 in exchange for Aaron Miller and a five-round suffrage in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Rangers , where he spent the following two and a half years.

In June 1993, the new elected franchise of the Florida Panthers Cirella in the NHL expansion draft in 1993 for which he played the following two years. After the right-shooter had started the 1995/96 season with the Milwaukee Admirals from the International Hockey League , he was signed on December 1, 1995 as a free agent by the Ottawa Senators , for which he played six games until the end of the season. At the time of his last appearance in the NHL, Cirealla was the last active player who had ever played for the Colorado Rockies. The Canadian ended his career after the 1996/97 season with the Kölner Haien in the German Ice Hockey League .

Following his career as a player, Cirella worked in the 1997/98 season as an assistant coach at his ex-club Florida Panthers in the NHL. He then worked in the same function for the Oshawa Generals from the OHL, where he had started his career, from 1998 to 2004 - with the exception of the 2001/02 season.

Another station as assistant coach was the Peterborough Petes before Cirella returned to the Oshawa Generals in 2010 in the same capacity. For the 2012/13 season, the Canadian became assistant coach at Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds appointed.

International

For Canada , Cirella took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 1983 , in which he finished third with his team.
