description
Vegetative characteristics
The small-flowered rock rose is a small shrub that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters.
The opposite arranged leaves are divided into petiole and petiole. The petiole is relatively wide. The simple and entire, pointed to indented leaf blade is ovate-elliptical with a length of 1 to 3 centimeters, weakly three-veined in the basal half and thickly tomentose on both sides with star hairs ( trichomes ).
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from March to May. The inflorescence contains only one to six flowers. The flower stalk is 5 to 10 millimeters long.
The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . There are five hairy and ciliate, pointed sepals . The obovate petals are pink in color and usually have edged at the end. The corolla has a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. There are many short, dense stamens . The large stigma sits almost without a stylus on the spherical, upper ovary .
Small, many-seeded and loculicidal, short-haired capsule fruits with a long, persistent calyx are formed. The small, hard seeds are about 1 millimeter in size.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
Occurrence
The small-flowered rockrose occurs in Libya , Lampedusa , Greece, Crete, the Aegean islands, Cyprus and in the European and Asian parts of Turkey. It is not certain whether it originally occurs in Italy. It thrives in the Garigue, particularly near the coast, on limestone .
