Citadel Movie Books

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Citadel Film Books was the name of a series of books published by Wilhelm Goldmann Verlag (Munich) . It was published first by Joe Hembus and later by Christa Bandmann.

history

The Citadel film books series goes back to the film books published by the US publisher Citadel Press . Some of the titles were the German translations of the original American editions. But there were also several volumes that were written by German authors especially for this series.

The books were published in the same format as the American editions (21 × 28 cm). This made them considerably larger than the paperback books previously published by Goldmann . That is why the books in this series were given the name "Goldmann Magnum". The titles are each dedicated to a well-known actor, director, a genre (horror film) or an entire film series (Wallace films, James Bond films). The richly illustrated volumes were very similar to each other: After a short introductory text, the content of the films was presented and discussed in detail. The film reviews were preceded by information about the actors involved and the staff.

Within the series, the trilogy on German film ("Der neue deutsche Film", "Klassiker des Deutschen Tonfilms" and "Klassiker des Deutschen Silfilms"), written by Joe Hembus together with a co-author, deserves special mention. With their work on German silent films, the authors did a veritable pioneering work, which was supported by the then director of the Munich Film Museum , Enno Patalas .

Initially, the popular book series, the total circulation of which the publisher stated as 500,000 copies, got off to a fairly successful start. The first volumes on Alfred Hitchcock , John Wayne and the James Bond films sold so well that two more editions each had to be printed. The German original editions about Romy Schneider , Heinz Rühmann and the pioneers of modern sex films also found buyers, while the later volumes about Marlon Brando and Ronald Reagan were slow- moving. In 1984 the series was finally discontinued, presumably because the sales figures fell short of expectations. Books about Leni Riefenstahl and Jean Gabin that had already been announced did not even appear.

Some titles were also released as licensed editions from the Bertelsmann Book Club .
