Clásico del Centro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clásico del Centro in Mexico was traditionally the meeting between Querétaro FC and San Luis FC as the most important football representatives of their respective states ( Querétaro and San Luis Potosí ). Because the cities of the two clubs ( Querétaro and San Luis Potosí ) are located on the federal highway Carretera Federal 57 , the meeting was sometimes referred to as Clásico de la Carretera 57 .

The sad end of this rivalry came for the people from the state of San Luis Potosí with the sale of the first division license of San Luis FC before the 2013/14 season , so that the club no longer existed after 56 years of existence. It was just as annoying for them that the end of the club saved their unloved rival Querétaro FC from relegation to the second division.

Immediately after the dissolution of San Luis FC, a new club was founded with Atlético San Luis , which followed in the footsteps of its predecessor as the immediate successor and has since contested the Clásico del Centro with Querétaro FC.

history

Estadio La Corregidora in Querétaro
Estadio Alfonso Lastras in San Luis Potosí

After San Luis FC was accepted into the second division for the 1957/58 season , both clubs played for the first time. Four years later, at the end of the 1960/61 season, they left the league together until they also returned together not met again in the 1970/71 season. Due to the immediate rise of the San Luis FC in the first division, the next matches were played again only between 1974 and 1976, when the San Luis FC had temporarily fallen back to the second division.

After that, however, there were no more league matches for a quarter of a century, which were only restarted when Querétaro FC returned to the second division in the 2001/02 season and have taken place almost annually since then. Their fate was more closely linked than rival clubs generally would like. For because San Luis won the second division championship and Querétaro the license of CF La Piedad acquired, both teams played in the 2002/03 first class and on the first matchday was the first time in the history of the Mexican Primera División for Clásico del Centro , the most 4 August 2002 at the Estadio La Corregidora in Querétaro and ended 1: 1. The second leg at the Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramírez of San Luis Potosí, which had only opened a few months earlier, took place on January 11, 2003 and also ended 1-1.

In the following season 2003/04 there was a 4: 4 goal in Querétaro in the first half of the season and a 3-0 home win for San Luis in the second half. Nevertheless, San Luis had to relegate at the end of the season, but was accompanied by Querétaro, who were unloaded due to the reduction of the first division from 20 to 18 teams. Both clubs found themselves in the 2004/05 season in the second division , which could not have been more dramatic in terms of their rivalry. Because both clubs were aiming for an immediate return to the top division and lived up to their respective favorite role insofar as San Luis FC won the Apertura championship in 2004 and Querétaro FC won the Clausura championship in 2005 . Because only one team is promoted per season in Mexico, the promoted team will be determined in an overall season finale in which the champions of Apertura and Clausura face each other. In the first leg, Querétaro FC prevailed 2-1 with their own home rights, while San Luis won the second leg 1-0 in front of their home crowd. Because the away goals rule is not used in the final climb, the match went into extra time . With a goal from Ariel González in the 106th minute to the final result of 2-0, San Luis rose to the first division, while Querétaro had to wait another year to return to the top division.

In the 2006/07 season , the two clubs met again in the first division and also in all four seasons between 2009 and 2013, after the 2007 relegated Querétaro FC returned to the top division and before the San Luis FC entered the Disbanded in summer 2013.
