Cláudio do Carmo Vieira

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cláudio do Carmo Vieira was a politician and administrative officer in the Indonesian- occupied East Timor .

Career

Vieira comes from a noble family from Moro ( Suco Parlamento ). His brother Pedro was Liurai from Pairara ( Lautém district ) in the 1970s . Cláudio Vieira was the administrative clerk in the Portuguese colonial times.

In 1974 the Carnation Revolution took place in Portugal and , like the other colonies, Portuguese Timor was prepared for independence. Cláudio Vieira became a member of APODETI , a party that propagated the colony's annexation to Indonesia and was financed by the neighboring state. When the civil war between União Democrática Timorense and FRETILIN broke out due to Indonesian influence in 1975 , Vieira fought with APODETI on the side of the UDT, which was defeated within three weeks. Many supporters fled to Indonesia, which used this as a reason to occupy East Timor. The invasion began openly on December 7, 1975. The border areas had already been occupied by troops disguised as UDT fighters. Vieira worked as a partisan for the Indonesians in Team Umi in the western areas of East Timor.

On February 3, 1976, the Indonesians invaded Lospalos , the district capital of Lautém. Until October 1976 the places Lautém and Tutuala and the streets connecting them were also in Indonesian hands. In May of the same year, Vieira was appointed Bupati (President of the Government) of the Lautém district by the Indonesians . From 1977 the Indonesian army also advanced into the previously unoccupied areas in the east of the country and destroyed the last bases of resistance. East Timor was largely under the control of Indonesia until 1979, but armed resistance continued. The Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste (FALINTIL) increasingly relocated their operations against the occupation to the east of the country, including Lautém. Between August 5 and 8, 1983, hundreds of members of the armed Indonesian militia ( Wanra , Hansip ) deserted from Lautém district and joined FALINTIL. The Indonesians then carried out punitive actions in their hometowns.

FALINTIL supporters were arrested in Muapitine at the end of November . Bupati Vieira and Indonesian military personnel came to Muapitine with five of these prisoners on December 8th . The villagers were forced to execute the five prisoners. Since one of the victims survived the attempts, he was buried alive on the instructions of Vieira. Vieira Bupati from Lautém stayed until 1985. Then he was replaced by Lieutenant Colonel Hendrikus (Henricos) Hardjatno.

In 1999 the Indonesians withdrew from East Timor. Vieira now lives in Indonesia. His daughter Eufrasia Vieira works as a photo model. His son Florencio Mario Vieira is involved in the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Timur for the party of the Great Indonesia movement (Gerinda) of ex-General Prabowo Subianto .
