Claas Johansson Uggla , (called Claas Uggla, his first name is also often written as Claes, Klaes or Klaas ) (* 1614 in the municipality of Ölseruds in Värmland , Sweden ; † June 1, 1676 during the sea battle near Öland ), was a Swedish baron and Admiral during the Scanian War .

Life

Claas Johansson Uggla was the son of Colonel Johan Uggla and Margareta Gyllenmärs. He was a page at Queen Christina's court . In 1634 Uggla accompanied the ambassador Erik Gyllenstierna to Moscow . A year later he traveled to Warsaw with Count Axel Sparre .

In 1670 he married Kristina Maria Sparre, a daughter of Axel Sparre.

In 1670 he and his brother were raised to the baron status.

Military career

He began his military career as a volunteer aboard a Swedish warship of Admiral Klas Flemming during the Danish War (1643–45). The following year he took part in the actions of the Swedish Army in Germany as a musketeer . During the siege of Prague in 1648, Uggla was distinguished by extreme bravery. As a result he was appointed corvette captain by Karl X. Gustav .

In 1650 he was appointed captain in the body regiment of King Karl X. Gustav. During the second Northern War he accompanied the Swedish king on his Polish campaign.

When the Danish War began in 1657, Uggla was transferred to the Swedish Navy. He was made a major in the Admiralty .

He took part in the naval battle in the Oresund on November 9, 1658. He commanded Charles X Gustav's ship. Two years later he was made lieutenant admiral.

In 1670 he was appointed admiral and appointed to the admiral council.

Together with the Admiral Lorentz Creutz the Elder , he took part in the sea ​​battle near Öland and was also killed. He commanded the ship of the line Sword in battle. After he was wedged in by Danish and Dutch ships and shot at for over two hours, all three masts were shot away and the ship was on fire. Uggla refused to hand over the ship and went down with the 600-strong crew. This approach earned him the myth of a war hero for the Swedish crown.
