Cladonia subulata , also known as awl antler , is a lichen related to reindeer lichen . It forms relatively elongated, between 3 cm and 6 cm high, gray-greenish colored stems that branch out irregularly in the upper third or fork at the top. In contrast to other cladonias , the awl antler lichen only partially forms imperfect cups standing at the tip, some of which can be completely missing. The lichen is flouryand sorediosis almost over the entire surfaceand at most forms small leaf-like structures on the ground, which are often missing. The brown apothecia are seldom formed. The lichen colonizes nutrient-poor, light-exposed locations. It grows on acidic, sandy to loamy soils in gaps in vegetation. It often occurs in heaths, on roadsides, embankments, sand or gravel pits. It is common throughout Europe and can also be found in North America.

Recently the similar species C. rei has also been included in C. subulata . Extensive morphological, chemical and molecular analyzes have shown, however, that C. subulata has great variability, but is genetically not closely related to C. rei .
