Clara Mathilde Faisst (born June 22, 1872 in Karlsruhe , † November 22, 1948 in Karlsruhe) was a German composer , music teacher, pianist and poet .

Life

Clara Faisst initially received her musical training at the Grand Ducal Conservatory in Karlsruhe. In 1894 she went to Berlin to study at the Royal University of Music . There she was a student of Ernst Rudorff (1840–1916), Robert Kahn (1865–1951), Woldemar Bargiel (1828–1897) and Max Bruch (1838–1920), in whose master class she took part. After completing her studies, Clara Faisst returned to Karlsruhe, where she worked as an artist and teacher.

In the period before the Second World War, Clara Faisst received attention as a composer and as an interpreter of piano works. Only a few works have so far been available on phonograms or published in new editions.

Of special interest are the numerous contacts and friendships that existed with important personalities. These included the painter Hans Thoma , who had been director of the art gallery and professor at the art academy in Karlsruhe since 1899, and above all musicians and musicologists such as Wilhelm Furtwängler , Max Bruch and Willy Rehberg . A friendship that lasted until the composer's death existed with the doctor, theologian and musician Albert Schweitzer (1875–1965). The artist's health deteriorated greatly in the last years of her life. Clara Faisst died on November 22, 1948 at the age of 76 in Karlsruhe.

Create

Clara Faisst composed many songs, which were also published in large numbers. Her complete works have 30 opus numbers, the later works being mainly instrumental music . Much of it was self-published and distributed on commission by various music stores in Karlsruhe. Some songs have been published as music supplements in magazines and thus gained wider circulation. Most of the works were created in the years up to 1930. Clara Faisst's handwritten and printed bank notes have been preserved in the Badische Landesbibliothek .
