Clarence Crafoord

Clarence Crafoord (born May 28, 1899 in Hudiksvall , † February 25, 1984 in Danderyd ) was a Swedish surgeon (cardiovascular and thoracic surgery ) in Stockholm .

biography

Clarence Crafoord received his licentiate in medicine in Stockholm in 1924 and his medical doctorate in 1938. He was the chief surgeon at Sabbatsberg Hospital ( Sabbatsberg-Sjukhuset ) in Stockholm (where he had worked from 1928) from 1939 to 1957 and head of the clinic from 1957 to 1966 for thoracic surgery at the hospital and from 1948 to 1966 professor at the Karolinska Institute , where he was a lecturer from 1940.

In October 1944 he and G. Nylin were the first to achieve surgical correction of a congenital coarctation of the aorta by resection of the congenital aortic stenosis with end-to-end sutures. That was a year before Robert Edward Gross , who is also often cited as a pioneer, succeeded.

In the 1930s he introduced heparin into thrombosis prophylaxis. He performed the first treatment of a deep vein thrombosis with heparin in 1937. In the 1940s he developed a safe method of pneumonectomy .

In 1954 he and his senior physician Åke Senning succeeded in using the heart-lung machine for the first time in Europe (the second successful use at all). The operated young patient had suffered from a tumor in the right ventricle and was still alive 40 years later.

In 1962, Crafoord received the Canada Gairdner International Award . In 1946 he received the Grand Prix ( Stora Pris ) of the Royal Technical University in Stockholm. He has received several honorary doctorates (Cordoba in Argentina, Coimbra, Turin 1954, San Marco University Lima, Grenoble 1949, Sorbonne 1950, Cuyo University Mendoza in Argentina).
