Clarence Seignoret

Sir Clarence Henry Augustus Seignoret GCB OBE (born February 25, 1919 , Roseau , Dominica ; † May 5, 2002 ) was a Dominican politician and lawyer and the third president of Dominica from 1983 to 1993.

Life

Seignoret was born in Roseau to Clarence Seignoret and Violet Seignoret (Riviere) . He received his education from Dominica Grammar School and College in Saint Lucia . Then he worked from 1936 as a civil servant in Dominica. From 1958 to 1960 he supplemented his studies with an International Public Service course at Balliol College , University of Oxford . After returning to Dominica, he continued his career, serving on multiple occasions as First Secretary of the Cabinet and Representative of the President. He was a member of the Dominica Labor Party .

The House of Assembly elected him in 1983 to succeed Aurelius Marie as president. He took his oath of office in October of that year. He was re-elected in 1988 and resigned in 1993.

During his term of office there was a visit from Elizabeth II , whom Seignoret had already accepted as an officer in the Order of the British Empire in 1966. Under Prime Minister Eugenia Charles of the visit was organized and SEIGNORET became the occasion for Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath beaten and thus in the personal nobility raised. In 1992 he was also awarded the Knight of Malta .

Seignoret married Judith Laronde in 1950 and had two children.
