Crispin Sorhaindo

Crispin Anselm Sorhaindo OBE (born May 23, 1931 , in Vieille Case , Dominica , † January 10, 2010 ) was the fourth President of Dominica . He was in office from October 25, 1993 to October 5, 1998.

Life

Sorhaindo was born in Vieille Case in 1931 . His father, Clive A. Sorhaindo , was the headmaster of the Vieille Case Government School where he began his education. He attended Dominica Grammar School and worked as a civil servant. After a few years he was sent to the University of Oxford to study at Trinity College Overseas Service (1956, 1957), and to the Royal Institute of Public Administration (Public Finance, 1963, 1964).

Between 1950 and 1973, Sorhaindo served in various capacities as a civil servant, including as Clerk of the Executive and Legislative Councils , the predecessor of the House of Assembly . He also held the positions of Chief Establishment Officer , Principal Secretary , Ministry of Finance and Financial Secretary . He was a member of the Dominica Freedom Party .

In 1963, Sorhaindo served served as Secretary of the Civil Service Commission with the Proposed East Caribbean Federation . He fought there to form a nation of the "little eight (states)" (the little eight) from the shards of the West Indian Federation . In 1966 he was the delegate in London at the conference that made Dominica a self-governing Associated State of Britain until independence in 1978. In 1969 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire .

Sorhaindo was a staunch regionalist and advocated Caribbean integration . He was representative of Dominica at the first conferences leading to the establishment of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA), the Caribbean Free Trade Area and CARICOM (Caribbean Common Market). He also helped found the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Sorhaindo worked for the Caribbean Development Bank , headquartered in Barbados, from 1973 to 1988. He held various positions including bank secretary , director and vice-president .

On his return to Dominica in 1988, he accepted the post of Speaker of the Dominica House of Assembly (1989-1993). In 1993 he was elected President. He held this office for one term (-1998).

Next life

Sorhaindo was a devout Catholic . For the church, he held various honorary positions for the Social Center , Help Age International and REACH . For this he was named Knight Commander of the Order of St. Sylvester in 1993. He also received the Venezuelan Medalla Naval Almirante Luis Brión (1998) and the Dominica Award of Honor (2001).

Sorhaindo died on January 10, 2010 after a long period of cancer . He left behind his wife, Ruby Allport , and six children.
