Vieille Case (also: vielle-case , from French : "old house", Arawak : Itassi ) is a place in the Parish Saint Andrew , Dominica . It is located on the north coast of the island. In 2001 the place had 726 inhabitants.

Vieille Case is located, facing east, on the headland of the north coast at the mouth of the Balthazar River between Penville in the north and Thibaud in the south. A small road (Northern Link Road) connects the places with each other and leads on the north cape of the island around the mountains Bellevue Mountain and Morne aux Diables ( Morne aux Diables ) to Tanetane in the Parish St. John .

The center of Vieille Case is called Under The Mango . There are a few shops and restaurants there. The eponymous mango tree is no longer in the center of the village. Tourist attractions are Au Parc Beach and Bwa Nef Falls ( Bwa Nef Falls ). The Au Tout beach is mainly used for fishing.

history

The area of ​​Dominica, like other islands in the West Indies , was first settled by Kalinago , who were called "Caribs" by the European colonialists. Itassy is the Kalinago name for the village. When the European colonialists immigrated, they lived in this area with the Kalinago. Today's residents are descendants of the mixed race of Kalinagos, French and African slaves.

Vieille Case was a film location for Pirates of the Caribbean .

Vieille Case is the birthplace of several local politicians including Edward Oliver LeBlanc , Roosevelt Skerrit, and Dominica Parliamentary Representative Alexis Williams , as well as President Crispin Sorhaindo. The most common family names are Hamilton , Joseph , LeBlanc , Royer and Seaman .

Agriculture

High in the mountains above the village is a small plain called La Vie Douce ("The Sweet Life"). In this field the inhabitants grow their crops: Dasheen , ginger , yams , pepper and bananas .

The Catholic Church stood on the main street next to Bank Credit Union until 2005 . It collapsed as a result of a violent earthquake.

Culture

There is only one primary school in the village, the most important secondary schools are in Roseau .
