Fred Degazon

Frederick Eutrope Degazon (born January 4, 1913 , Castries , Saint Lucia , † October 4, 2008 in Greater London , United Kingdom ) was the first President of Dominica . He came from Castries, Saint Lucia, and lived in exile in London from 1980 .

Life

Degazon was educated at St. Mary's College , St. Lucia and then studied law at the University of London . He received his bar license from Lincoln's Inn in 1934 and worked as a private attorney in St Lucia and Dominica until 1940. He then served as a civil servant in Dominica, Saint Lucia and Jamaica until his retirement in 1969. In 1949 he was commissioner for the reconstruction of Castries after the devastating fire of 1948. In retirement in Dominica in 1977 he was elected Speaker of the House of Assembly and elected first president by parliament after the declaration of independence in 1978, a mainly representative office.

In June 1979, during a constitutional crisis caused by calls for socialist reforms, Degazon attempted to leave the country and was eventually granted asylum in England (June 11, 79). The House of Assembly initially selected Louis Cools-Lartigue as a replacement , who resigned the next day and was replaced by Jenner Armor . Degazon only officially resigned in February 1980. He died in exile in London on October 4, 2008 at the age of 95.
