Clathrus bicolumnatus is a species of mushroom from the family of stinkhorn relatives that occurs in Japan.
features
The fruiting bodies arise from spherical, cream-colored witch eggs , which sometimes have a few brown scales. When ripe, it either bursts irregularly from the base or with a lid that is held by a few white mycelium strands . The yellowish, 8.5 cm long and 2.5 cm thick, spongy receptaculum , which erupts from the witch's egg when the fruit bodies ripen, consists of two separate columns that are connected at the top. At first they are still pressed together, with increasing age they expand and give the mushroom a broad, egg-shaped appearance. The individual columns taper at the top and are semicircular in cross-section with a well-formed groove. The fruit mass ( gleba ) is on the inside of the upper quarter to third of the two columns and smells like a carrion. The spores are rod-shaped and measure 3.5-4.5 × 1.5 μm
distribution
Clathrus bicolumnatus is only found in Japan. According to Michael Kuo, it also occurs in California. Presumably it was brought in with soil from the East Asian island nation.
ecology
Like all latticework, Clathrus bicolumnatus is a soil dweller that feeds on dead, organic material ( saprobiont ). The spores are spread via flies , which are attracted by the putrid smell of the ripe mushroom and eat the fruit mass. The spores are later excreted undigested and thus reach new locations.
Systematics
Clathrus bicolumnatus was first described as Laternea bicolumnata by Curtis Gates Lloyd in 1908 . Pier Andrea Saccardo and Alessandro Trotter put the species in the genus of latticework ( Clathrus ).
