Clathrus delicatus is a species of mushroom belonging tothe Stinkhorn family , which occurs in India and Sri Lanka.
features
The mature receptacle , i.e. the spore-bearing part of the fruiting body, has a grid-like, egg-shaped to spherical shape with a short stalk, is white and, depending on the author, is 1–2.5 cm high and 1.2–1.5 cm wide. It forms about ten or fewer lattices, which are isodiametrically stretched in the upper part and more vertically in the lower part. The base of the arms is flattened but with a distinct groove. The still unripe fruiting bodies, the witch's eggs are round, about one centimeter in size, white to pale orange. The gleba is only sparsely developed, limited to special organs that look like three-legged stools. These organs are individually on the branches of the upper arms. In contrast to other stinkhorn species, it is almost odorless. The very thin-skinned volva is pale brown and surrounds the stem and the lower part of the receptaculum. The spores are elongated to cylindrical, hyaline and smooth, and measure 3.5–4 × 1.8–2.2 µm.
distribution
Clathrus delicatus is only found in Sri Lanka and India. Known from southern India, namely from the Indian states of Karnataka and West Bengal , it was recently also found in Assam , in northeast India.
ecology
Clathrus delicatus , like all latticework, is a soil dweller that feeds on dead, organic material ( saprobiont ). Among other things, it grows on bamboo litter . The spores are spread by insects that are attracted by the putrid smell of the ripe mushroom and eat the fruit mass. In this way, the spores get to new locations.
Systematics and taxonomy
Clathrus delicatus was first described by Miles Joseph Berkeley & Christopher Edmund Broome in 1875 . Since the species has not yet been included in phylogenetic studies, the degree of relationship to other latticework is still unclear.
