Claude-François Rostain (born December 16, 1916 in Ria-Sirach , † February 10, 2015 ) was a French diplomat .

Life

Claude-François Rostain attended the Collège Saint-Joseph in Avignon , then the École nationale de la France d'outre-mer and studied law in Paris .

Rostain was the French ambassador to Lomé in Togo from 1966 to 1968 . French Africa policy was marked by disengagement in the course of the 1960s. The Official Development Assistance decreased from 1960: 1.38 to 1968: 0.67% of the French gross national income . As the French ambassador to Togo , Rostain announced on the night of January 12th to 13th, 1967, the news of the resignation of President Nicolas Grunitzky and the assumption of power by Étienne Eyadéma in agreement with Grunitzky.

From 1970 to 1972 Rostain was the French ambassador to Niamey in Niger . French companies had prospected and developed extensive uranium ore deposits there and set up processing plants for yellowcake . In the run-up to the first oil crisis in 1973, the Niger government sought sovereignty over the uranium mined on its territory and sought to terminate the defense agreement with France. Against the background of these differences of interests, a conference of 200 delegates from 34 Francophonie countries took place in Niamey at the beginning of 1970 . The aim was to found a joint office for cultural and technical cooperation.

In January 1972, Georges Pompidou visited Hamani Diori in Niamey . Among his declarations was the claim that France would not impose her help and friendship on any state. In April 1972, Claude-François Rostain left Niger without comment. Paris sent Paul-Henri Gaschignard as the new ambassador, who signed an agreement with Hamani Diori on March 28, 1973. On April 15, 1974, Hamani Diori was deposed by Seyni Kountché . Claude-François Rostain was then discussed as the French President's Africa advisor ( Monsieur Afrique ). From December 11, 1972 to 1977 he was Viguier (Vogt) of Andorra .
