from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claudia Köhler (born November 11, 1971 in Schwerin ) is a German biologist and lecturer at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Sweden.

Career

Köhler studied biology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 1990 to 1996 . She received her doctorate in 1999 from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and then moved to the Institute for Plant Biology under Ueli Grossniklaus at the University of Zurich . From 2005 to 2010 she was assistant professor at the Institute for Plant Sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

Since 2010 Köhler has been Professor of Plant Molecular Cell Biology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala (Sweden).

research

Köhler deals with epigenetics in plants. She conducts research at the interface between developmental and evolutionary biology and tries to identify the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that influence seed development and plant speciation. Her main focus is on the role of the endosperm in controlling seed growth, regulating embryonic development and establishing interspecies barriers and interploid hybridizations. She showed how the barriers to hybridization can be removed by epigenetic manipulation of the male genome.

In Arabidopsis thaliana she was able to reveal the first genomically shaped gene for speciation.

Another research area at Köhler is transposons . Transposons are mobile genomic elements that can change their position in the genome. Köhler was able to show that transposons form the genetic basis for hybridization barriers between recently diverging species, which explains the rapid evolution of hybridization barriers. She examines the epigenetic pathways involved in this process.
