Claus Detlef Claussen (born October 10, 1945 in Hameln , Lower Saxony ) is a German radiologist, nuclear medicine specialist and neuroradiologist.

Life and professional development

Claus D. Claussen grew up in his native Hameln and studied medicine, philosophy and history in Erlangen and Heidelberg. In 1972, with his work "Sport and Heart Attack - Model Study for the Formation of Hypotheses with the Attempt to Classify Physical Activity" at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. He completed his specialist training at Heidelberg University Hospital and in 1978 he became a specialist in radiology. From 1975 to 1978 he was also able to work scientifically at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) on the first German whole-body computer tomograph, where he was particularly concerned with the use of CT for brain tumors, cranial base and facial cranial processes, pancreatic diseases and CT radiation planning. From 1979 Claussen was assistant professor and senior physician at the radiation clinic with polyclinic of the Charlottenburg Clinic (now DRK Clinics Berlin-Westend ) of the Free University of Berlin , where he became senior physician in 1984. Claussen acquired the title of specialist in nuclear medicine in 1980 and completed his habilitation in 1982 at the Free University of Berlin on the subject of “Dynamic Computed Tomography - Basics, Experimental Contrast Medium Studies, Clinical Applications”. In 1989 he successfully completed another qualification as a specialist in neuroradiology . In 1986 he was appointed to a professorship for radiology at the Free University of Berlin .

In 1988 Claussen accepted the call to the C4 professorship for radiological diagnostics at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen , where from October 1988 to March 2014 he was medical director of the department for diagnostic and interventional radiology at the radiological clinic, director of the radiological clinic and head of the MTRA school was.

Claussen played a key role in the development of the hybrid MRT / PET technology for medical imaging (2005) and, together with his team in Berlin and Tübingen, introduced new imaging modalities, in the development of which he played a key role: dynamic CT (1980), MRI Contrast agent Gadolinium-DTPA (in cooperation with the Schering company on one of the first magnetic resonance tomographs, 1983, funded by the BMBF), laser angioplasty, cardio-MRT (1992), multidetector and cardio-CT (1998), 3-Tesla-MR ( 2000), whole-body MR (2004) and hybrid PET / MRI (2005). In 2015, Claussen received the gold medal of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) for his pioneering work in the development of new imaging technologies and his services to European radiology.

Since the late 1990s, Claussen has been committed to biotechnology at the interface between academic research, clinical application and industry. He was one of the initiators of the successful BioProfile application for the region between Stuttgart, Tübingen, Esslingen, Reutlingen and Neckar-Alb. Subsequently, in 2001 he was jointly responsible for the establishment of BioRegio STERN Management GmbH and co-founder of the Association for the Promotion of Biotechnology Stuttgart / Tübingen / Neckar-Alb eV (from 2011 "Association for the Promotion of Biotechnology and Medical Technology BioMedTech eV"), whose fortunes he co-determined as chairman of the board from 2001 to 2014. From 2001 to 2011 Claussen was also chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Minimally Invasive Technology Tübingen-Tuttlingen MITT.

Claussen was elected expert reviewer of the DFG and co-editor and scientific advisory board of various scientific journals (progress X-rays RöFo, Investigative Radiology, Trauma und Beruf, Der Chirurg). He has worked as a reviewer for Radiology, European Journal of Radiology, Advances X-Ray RöFo, Investigative Radiology, Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (JMRI), among others.

In 2014 Claussen retired as professor emeritus. Claussen has headed the “Metabolic Imaging” department at the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases, IDM, as part of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD eV), Helmholtz Center Munich, since 2014. Since then he has also headed the Radiology SpOrt Stuttgart practice, which looks after athletes from the Olympic training center in Stuttgart and the VFB Stuttgart. Claussen has also been running the Radiological Practice Waiblingen together with Hansjörg Rempp since April 1, 2016. Since 2015 he has also been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Imaging Service AG in Niederpöcking.
