In the club

As an A-youth player, he made it into the finals of the German championship in 1977/78 , together with the later professional players Franz-Wilhelm Brings , Franz-Josef Steininger and Jürgen Ulitzka . The opponent was FC Hertha 03 Zehlendorf , for whom the later 1990 world champion, Pierre Littbarski , scored two goals in the final, the only two goals for the Berlin team. The players at Gebauer's side celebrated five goals, so the game ended 5: 2 in Essen's Uhlenkrugstadion and the Duisburg youngsters won the championship.

Gebauer made the jump from the youth to the squad of the professional team of the MSV. For the Zebras, he made his debut in the Bundesliga on the last day of the 1980/81 season in the 2-0 defeat against VfB Stuttgart . Coach Friedhelm Wenzlaff gave the young defender the opportunity to show his skills over 90 minutes. In the following season Gebauer completed his next six appearances in the Bundesliga. However, the 21-year-old was unable to prevail over other players such as Bernard Dietz , Frank Saborowski , Herbert Büssers and Peter Fenten . So he moved to 1. FC Bocholt after his second Bundesliga season . With Bocholt he played in the Oberliga Nordrhein for the next two years . After a second place in the table in the first year, in his second year in Bocholt, the 1983/84 season , under coach Rolf Müller and teammates such as Michael Tönnies , Paul Holz and Friedhelm Schütte, the championship was celebrated with a six point lead. In the following round of promotion, Bocholt's promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was missed. Gebauer switched to Schwarz-Weiß Essen and continued to play in the top division.
