Claus von der Betten (* 1460 ; † 1541 ) was a German politician and mayor of Stade since 1501 .

Life

He was one of the most powerful men of that time on the Lower Elbe and the progenitor of all von derdecke who now lived in four great lines .

Probably he had the opposite of the former Archbishop of Bremen Johann III. Rode von Wale made unruly knighthood his successor Christoph von Braunschweig-Lüneburg compliant, and made himself so indispensable to him since 1511. He also helped him with large financial advances.

In 1516 he received a privilege for this from Christoph, which made him and his descendants independent.

A witness heard in a trial between Stade and Hamburg in 1577 gives a clear picture of his achievements. He explained that the mayor Claus vdD had successfully defended himself against the Hamburg Elbe customs, whereupon the city of Stade and Hamburg came to a settlement that everyone wanted to let the other pass freely. The witness went on to testify that the people of Hamburg always said that the people of Stader could spend a lot of money if they could have such mayors as Claus vdD and his son Herrmann again. After the latter death, the Hamburgers would have removed the customs again.

At that time there was not just one, but four mayors in Stade, two of whom took turns in office every year.

This form of the coat of arms from 1591 has been preserved to this day. The Dutch spelling of the family name with van can be found in some documents around 1600.
