Coat of arms of the von der ceiling family

The von derdecke family is an old noble family from Lower Saxony . For more than 750 years, the family center has been in the vicinity of Freiburg / Elbe in the Kehdingen region on the Lower Elbe , on the south bank of the Elbe between the Oste River and the city of Stade . The pronunciation of the name from the ceiling [ˈdeːkən] with an expansion c is the same as that of the Buddenbrock family or the state of Mecklenburg .

history

First documents and origin

Herewart and Alverik von Deca are the first documented members of the family. Around 1250 they were vassals of the knight Friedrich von Haseldorf . Friedrich was canon of the Hamburg cathedral chapter and became bishop of Dorpat in 1268 .

The gender of those from the ceiling can be traced back to Nicolaus de Deken , a squire of the Bremen monastery , who owned a farm on the Kampe between Wechtern and Freiburg / Elbe from around 1290 to 1360 . For the document from 1360 see: "Nicolaus de Deken as a witness in a document" .

Origin of the five lines

Around 1500 there was the main line of the family and the Stader line . Johan von derdecke lived from 1400 to 1467 and founded the Stader line , which died out in the male line in 1602 .

In the main line of the family there was the mayor of Stad , Claus von der Betten (1460–1541). All those living on the ceiling are descended from this mayor. Of the mayor's eight children, five sons founded the family's five lineages. See: Tribe list of the von der ceiling family

Stade around 1640

The family has been closely associated with Stade since the 15th century

Members of the Stader line as well as the main line of the family held various offices in Stade in the city council and as mayors. In particular, the mayor of Stad, Claus von der Brille, was one of the most powerful men on the Lower Elbe at that time. He helped the Archbishop of Bremen, Christoph von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, to maintain power in Stade. Many family members were members and senior citizens of the St. Antonii Brotherhood in Stade , which has been committed to charity and cultural support in Stade since 1439.

From 1963, Thassilo von der Betten was president of the knighthood of the Duchy of Bremen as well as the founder and first president of the landscape of the duchies of Bremen and Verden . It was the first regional association in Lower Saxony . From 1965 to 1977 Thassilo von der Betten was also the senior district director of the Stade district .
