Blankets (noble family)
The von derdecke family is an old noble family from Lower Saxony . For more than 750 years, the family center has been in the vicinity of Freiburg / Elbe in the Kehdingen region on the Lower Elbe , on the south bank of the Elbe between the Oste River and the city of Stade . The pronunciation of the name from the ceiling [ˈdeːkən] with an expansion c is the same as that of the Buddenbrock family or the state of Mecklenburg .
history
First documents and origin
Herewart and Alverik von Deca are the first documented members of the family. Around 1250 they were vassals of the knight Friedrich von Haseldorf . Friedrich was canon of the Hamburg cathedral chapter and became bishop of Dorpat in 1268 .
The gender of those from the ceiling can be traced back to Nicolaus de Deken , a squire of the Bremen monastery , who owned a farm on the Kampe between Wechtern and Freiburg / Elbe from around 1290 to 1360 . For the document from 1360 see: "Nicolaus de Deken as a witness in a document" .
Origin of the five lines
Around 1500 there was the main line of the family and the Stader line . Johan von derdecke lived from 1400 to 1467 and founded the Stader line , which died out in the male line in 1602 .
In the main line of the family there was the mayor of Stad , Claus von der Betten (1460–1541). All those living on the ceiling are descended from this mayor. Of the mayor's eight children, five sons founded the family's five lineages. See: Tribe list of the von der ceiling family
The family has been closely associated with Stade since the 15th century
Members of the Stader line as well as the main line of the family held various offices in Stade in the city council and as mayors. In particular, the mayor of Stad, Claus von der Brille, was one of the most powerful men on the Lower Elbe at that time. He helped the Archbishop of Bremen, Christoph von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, to maintain power in Stade. Many family members were members and senior citizens of the St. Antonii Brotherhood in Stade , which has been committed to charity and cultural support in Stade since 1439.
From 1963, Thassilo von der Betten was president of the knighthood of the Duchy of Bremen as well as the founder and first president of the landscape of the duchies of Bremen and Verden . It was the first regional association in Lower Saxony . From 1965 to 1977 Thassilo von der Betten was also the senior district director of the Stade district .
Deckens in South Africa
A descendant of the Oerichsheiler line is Adolphus (1834–1886) . In 1855 Adolphus emigrated to South Africa via England . Of his many descendants, some with the name von derdecke live in King William's Town , Fort Beaufort and near Durban .
coat of arms
The coat of arms shows a black boiler hook in silver . On the helmet with black and silver covers stands a crumpled natural oak trunk with green leaves hanging down on both sides. For the coats of arms blankets-Offen, the counts blankets-Oerichsheil and blankets-Ringelheim see the descriptions and illustrations in the Hanover coat of arms book.
Historical coats of arms
Seal of Friedrich von derdecke on a document from 1394. It is the oldest representation of the family's coat of arms. (signed)
All six seals are from the appendix to the book: The von der Betten family ... 1865.Heinrich von dercken's seal from 1585. He had three kettle hooks in his coat of arms and lived until 1590. Heinrich was councilor and mayor of Stade . He had estates in Götzdorf and Aschhorn near Drochtersen and belonged to the Stader line, which had died out in the male line. (signed)
Seal of Peter from the ceiling from 1591. Peter lived from 1539 to 1619 and is the son of Hermann a mayor of Stade and the founder of the first line. Peter owned the goods Kampe, Oerichsheil, Ritterhof and Wechtern. This form of the coat of arms from 1591 has been preserved to this day.
Johann Friedrich von der Betten acquired Ringelheim in 1817 and was given the primogenic title of count in 1833 . In terms of nobility , the title of firstborn lives on. The coat of arms contains eagles , lions and griffins like the ancient coat of arms of the Counts of Ringelheim .
The general of the cavalry Georg von der Betten chose two soldiers from his hussar regiment of the royal German legion as shield holders . In 1835 he was awarded the title of Count . The title lasted until the death of his wife Luise, a princess of Hesse .

- ↑ According to a resolution of the German Nobility Law Committee in 2012, the title of count is continued from the primogenitus, who is descended from the marital male line of Johann Friedrich von derdecke. The inheritance of the title is not linked to the possession of a good. The Erstgeburtstitel are not inherited as part of the civil surname since 1919 as other titles of nobility in Germany. These first-born titles of the “historical nobility” are only continued in the Genealogical Handbook of the Nobility . The order of the counts to the title of 1833 is: 1.
