history

The donors were nine citizens of Stader . They undertook to give eight poor people a loaf of bread, a pound of bacon and a penny of Lübisch every Tuesday in the Church of St. Cosmae . The number of members was limited to 24. It included members of the state administration as well as the knighthood . During the Swedish era, senior officials were mainly represented in the fraternity. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the brotherhood had more than 24 brothers, most of whom were civil servants , military officers and lawyers .

The brotherhood was not limited to direct gifts. In the 17th century she supported the common city poor. The foundation's purposes , such as handing out alms , grants and support, are still there today.

In the 18th century the brotherhood, which was financed mainly by interest, lease and rental income, like the other brotherhoods, had considerable problems. The number of members decreased from 30 (1706) through 19 (1721) to only 10 brothers (1730). This meant that the annual foundation festival, which lasted 2 days in 1728 and cost 4 thalers per brother, was shortened to one day in 1732 and only 2 thalers were demanded from the brothers. There is still one special feature of the foundation festival today: the St. Antonii Brotherhood celebrates its foundation festival every Tuesday after Laetare , but only every 50 years with the wives of the brothers.

The brotherhood has a historically grown inventory of silver goblets, the oldest of which, the so-called Renaissance goblet, comes from the workshop of the Stade goldsmith Joachim Ruge, who died in 1611. The so-called Buckel-Pokkal was probably donated in 1649 by Field Marshal Carl Gustav Wrangel . Another cup made in Hamburg in 1703 was donated by the Governor General Nicolaus Gyldenstern , who was accepted into the brotherhood in 1699. The youngest cup is a bowl and tray from 1989, donated for the 550th Foundation Festival, by the Lilienthal silversmith Christoph Diemer. All in all, the brotherhood's silver has an extraordinarily high cultural, historical and artistic value.

In 1989, 14.8% of the brothers were in the state administration and judiciary, 2.8% were in the military, 10.2% were landowners and 40.7% were lawyers, teachers and doctors, 3.7% belonged to the municipal administration, 15.7% were merchants and 10.2% clergy.
