Martin Boyken

Martin Boyken (born February 1, 1908 in Hamburg ; † September 12, 1983 in Hildesheim ) was twice mayor of Hildesheim, president of the regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Hanover and director of the Andreanum .

Life

Boyken grew up as the son of a business school director in Hamburg. He studied Protestant theology , history , German and philosophy in Hamburg and Marburg . After completing his state examination, he worked in school and was dismissed from the Confessing Church in 1936 . From 1936 to 1944 he served in the naval artillery and from 1944 to 1947 he was a prisoner of war in North Africa.

Between 1947 and 1955 he was teacher at the Athenaeum in Stade , then headmaster at the school Andreanum in Hildesheim. From 1959 he was Hildesheim City Councilor for the CDU , between 1964 and 1968 mayor and from 1960 to 1964 and from 1968 to 1972 mayor of the city. From 1959 to 1974 he served as president of the regional synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover and in 1973 he became president of the 5th General Synod of the united Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany .

Since the 1930s he has published a number of romantically and religiously colored volumes of poetry. In addition, he published art history studies. Due to his professional and political stress, he finally stopped his writing.

Boyken received the Ring of Honor of the City of Hildesheim and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class. On October 10, 1974 he was granted honorary citizenship. In the district of Itzum the Martin-Boyken-Ring is named after him.
