Auguste von der Betten , née Auguste Meyer , (born November 30, 1827 in Bleckede ; † April 25, 1908 in Hanover ) was a German writer who wrote several short stories and 50 novels under the pseudonyms A. von der Elbe and A. vd Elbe published.

Life

Auguste was born as the fifth of six children to the Hanoverian judicial officer Heinrich August Meyer zu Bleckede and his wife Henriette Büchting. She grew up in Bleckede Castle , located "high on the Elbe" , which was the official seat of the executive and judicial administration ("Amtshaus"). Her father previously held high offices during the French occupation. From 1809 to 1810 he was the first police director at the Hanover Police Department . He was appointed travel marshal by King Jérôme von Westphalen for an inspection tour through northern Germany in 1810. Heinrich August Meyer was considered a talent for organization and after the trip was appointed prefect for the newly founded department of the Elbe and Weser estuaries , which existed from September 1, 1810 to December 31, 1810 with its seat in Stade. After further professional positions, including in Hamburg, he came to Bleckede in 1819. According to a diary from the years 1809 to 1812, which has now disappeared, and various family papers in her novel The Brothers Meienburg , Auguste von der Betten processed the life of her father .

In 1849 she married the Hanoverian major of the cavalry Hieronymus von der Betten in Lüneburg . Hieronymus (1818–1875) grew up in Balje in the Kehdingen region near Freiburg / Elbe . She lived with her husband in various garrison towns. In the battle of Langensalza in 1866 he led the Hanoverian Guard du Corps . When the Kingdom of Hanover became Prussian, he said goodbye to military service. After 1866 they lived near Göttingen . In 1873 the couple moved from the ceiling to Meiningen . There Hieronymus became chamberlain in Saxony-Meiningen in southern Thuringia on April 2, 1875, a few months before his death . A long-term friendship developed in Meiningen between Auguste von derdecke and Ellen Franz , who also came from middle-class circles and was ennobled when Helene von Heldburg was ennobled shortly before her wedding to Duke Georg II (Saxony-Meiningen) . The von der blankets had no offspring.

After Hieronymus' death in 1875, Auguste wrote stories under her pseudonyms "A. von der Elbe" and "A. vd Elbe", which she published in newspapers. As a teenager she showed her talent for storytelling early on when she led small family performances. The first anonymous publications took place between 1856 and 1865. The first verifiably attributable publication dates from 1861. In the 19th century it was common to use stars instead of the author's name if the authorship was to remain hidden. Later, Auguste von derdecke was heavily influenced literarily by Hermann Allmers , with whom she also had a friendship for decades. He wrote the preface to some of her early books. In the foreword to the work: "Lüneburg Stories" he wrote the first short biography about Auguste von der Betten. He gave the year of birth 1828. This demonstrably wrong year of birth is often taken over by other reviewers to this day. The birth entry in the Bleckede church register took place after the baptism on January 8, 1828 for November 30, 1827.

From 1883 the poet lived in Hanover .

From 1877 onwards she wrote 50 novels, some of which had large editions. With her imaginative and by no means mundane stories she quickly conquered larger audiences. The mostly homeland-related novels often had a historically true starting point and were exciting entertainment literature. Examples are The Counts of Roden about the noble family of the Counts of Roden , which died out in 1553 and played an important role in the urban development of Hanover, or the book Der Bürgermeisterturm , which connects the Lüneburg Prelate War with a love story. Her books appeared in many editions, and some were printed until 1930. Reprint editions appeared in 1986 (Der Bürgermeisterturm), 1991 (Souverän), 2012 (Brothers Meienburg) and 2013 (The long guy).

She chose the pseudonym A. von der Elbe because she did not want to discredit the family name von derdecke through her writing. On the other hand, it was also an homage to her place of birth, Bleckede, because she was fascinated by the Elbe as a child. She chose the abbreviation of the first name because at first she did not want to be recognized as a writing woman. In the 19th century it was still the exception for women to write. In some reviews of the time, "the author" is also used. Later it was no longer a secret that she was a writer and her real name was also known at that time through her own contribution in Hannoversche Writers of the Present from 1888 with the well-known photo of her as well as through entries in Meyers Konversations-Lexikon from 1892 and in " Brockhaus Konversations-Lexikon "from 1893.
