Coat of arms of the von der ceiling family

Herewart and Alverik von Deca are first mentioned in documents around 1250 as vassals of the knight Friedrich von Haseldorf . They are the first recorded members of the von derdecke family .

The sex can be traced back to Nicolaus de Deken , a squire who lived approximately from 1290 to 1360.

Connections to families or individuals with similar names

In the case of old family and place names, imprecise spellings and the different languages (Latin and German) make it difficult to assign families and places correctly. For example, in two documents in Brandenburg in 1343, Hertoge Conrad von Decka is written instead of Duke Conrad von Teck and in Latin Conradus dux de Decka instead of Conradus dux de Teck . Often, great differences in spelling can be observed from one document to the next. In most cases, a connection between two different names can only be confirmed with a large number of documents on the basis of additional information such as location details, coat of arms, family details or first names. The data from documents are usually insufficient for inclusion in the family tables or even contradict the inclusion of people with the same or similar name. The connections to the roots outside of Kehdingen are so far only vague conjectures, and evidence for these connections is lacking.

In Siebmacher's coat of arms from 1605, the difference between D and T is also not taken into account. Instead of V.DER TECKE you have to read on page 181 “from the ceiling”.

Dyck Castle , one of the most important
moated castles in the Rhineland , belonged to Cunradus de Dikka around 1200 .

No direct relationship to Cunradus de Dikka at Dyck Castle

Due to the similarity of names, the family researcher Hans Christian Brandenburg suspected a relationship between the von derdecke family and Cunradus de Dikka , who in 1202 together with his son attested to a certificate of inheritance from the sons of Henry the Lion . After the discovery of further documents on Cunradus de Dikka , a connection between the families could not be confirmed. The de Dikka = von Dyck family lived on the Lower Rhine between Grevenbroich and Mönchengladbach , and they had owned the Dyck moated castle since 1094 . When the lords of Dyck died out in the male line in 1394, the lords of Reifferscheidt inherited Dyck Castle . In 1413 the lords of Reifferscheidt-Dyck also inherited the property of the old counts of Salm and from 1455 on they were called Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck .

There was no family connection between 1919 and 1924. At that time, Maria Margaretha (Magit) from the blanket was lady- in- waiting to Prince Alfred zu Salm-Reifferscheidt . Magit (1882–1924) was the ninth child of Gideon von der Betten and his wife Maria Josefa Sthamer. Magit died two days after a tragic collision between cars and trains at a level crossing near Dyck Castle. The prince and the chauffeur died at the scene of the accident.

The battle of Altenesch on the Weser in 1234
Extract from a certificate of inheritance of the sons of Henry the Lion from 1202, which Cunradus de Dikka confirmed.

Detmar tom Dieke also: tom Dyk or vom Dike

Detmar vom Dike (Thedmarus de Aggere) was a military leader in Stedingen . He died on May 27, 1234 in the battle of Altenesch . The connection to our family is a brisk assertion in the article on the Stedinger heroes by Hans Werding. Unfortunately there are many families with a kettle hook in their coat of arms. Only the common black boiler hook in the coat of arms is therefore insufficient evidence of a relationship between the families.

The name "de Deken" in Belgium, the Netherlands and the Bremen area

Nikolaus de Deken on Wechtern and Kampe is mentioned in 1360. He is the first from the ceiling in the family tables of the von der ceiling family; All the living ones from the ceiling come from this Nicholas. He lived from about 1290 to after 1360.

No family connection has been found to date to the following three deks :

Claves de Deken was a councilor in Bremen . He was killed on the steps of the town hall in 1366. See also Hans Werding in his critical article about the Stedingers who allegedly emigrated to Kehdingen .

Mauritius de Deken was from Oldenburg or Bremen in 1362 , reports the Lübeck Franciscan Detmar in a Low German chronicle: “The stichtes vormunder van Bremen was her Mauritius de deken; he was en here van Oldenborch unde was menlik unde en gud broddegen. The hertoge van Luneborch bouwede do en slot up de Wummene; dat het de Louwenbrughe. ”In High German: The builder (or founder) guardian of Bremen was Mauritius de Deken; he was a gentleman from Oldenburg and a generous man. The Duke of Lüneburg built a castle there on the Wümme ; that was called Lauenbrück .

Willem de Deken , b. in Bruges around 1274, executed in Paris on December 24, 1328. He was mayor of Bruges and military leader in the uprising in Flanders .

The de Deken family name still exists in Belgium and the Netherlands to this day .

Seal of Peter from the ceiling from 1591

The name "van der ceiling"

In the seal of 1591 for Peter van der Betten , a grandson of the mayor Claus von der Betten , the name does not begin with "von", but with "van" (a picture of the seal see right). This spelling with “van” can also be found in most documents up to the 16th century and in Peter's father, Hermann. He is the founder of the first line. Hermanus van Deken studied in Rostock in 1521/22.

The name van der Betten is known from the captain in the legend : " Flying Dutchman ". The legend was used in 1834 by Heinrich Heine in his story "From the Memoirs of Herr von Schnabelewopski", and Richard Wagner , who was on friendly terms with Heine in Paris , was inspired by the story and in 1841 wrote his opera " Der Fliegende Holländer ".

In the Netherlands the name van der ceiling is not very common.

Around 1250: Herewart and Alverik von Deca named as tenants

Herewart and Alverik von Deca are the first recorded members of the von derdecke family.

The Hoyer deed book from 1855 reports on a deed from 1250 to 1255. In the deed, Herewart and Alverik von Deca are the tenants of land at what is now Neuhaus an der Oste . The text of this oldest document on family history reads: Her herewart unde alverik by Deca hadden by heren vredeke twe houe in the dorpen ierlinhusen ande en pund in bedenem unde en pund in bulestrope.

This means in today's German: Mr. Herewart and Alverich von Deca had (leased) two farms in the village of Ihlienworth and one pound (taxes) in Belum and one pound (taxes) in Bülsdorf from Mr. Friedrich von Haseldorf . ( Bülsdorf is the oldest part of Neuhaus.)

1360: Nicolaus de Deken as a witness in a document

The ancestors of all family members can be fully traced back to this Nicolaus.

The document of July 25, 1360 has the following content:

With the consent of his unions, Friedrich and Augustin, sons of the deceased Nicolaus von der Doese, and the brothers Friedrich and Johann, sons of the deceased Johann von der Doese, the squire Heinrich von der Doese announced to the Benedictine monastery in Buxtehude for 200 Hamburg marks 15 acres of land to have sold in the Feldmark Wechtern in the parish of Freiburg. 22. According to a resolution of the German Nobility Law Committee in 2012, the title of count is continued from the primogenitus, who is descended from the marital male line of Johann Friedrich von derdecke . The inheritance of the title is not linked to the possession of a good. The Erstgeburtstitel are not considered part of the middle-class since 1919 surname inherited like other titles of nobility in Germany . These first-born titles of the “historical nobility” are only continued in the Genealogical Handbook of the Nobility . The order of the counts to the title of 1833 is: 1st Count Johann Friedrich hannoverscher Generalfeldzeugmeister (1769-1840) - 2nd Count Adolphus (1807-1886) member of the Hanover State Council - 3rd Count Georg member of the German Reichstag (1836-1898) - 4th Count Ernst August, journalist in London (1867–1934) - 5th Count Guido, missing in Russia (1923–1944) - 6th Count Johann Georg, farmer in Benz (1912–1998) - 7th Count Albrecht, Dipl.-Phys. & Dipl.-Kfm. in Hamburg (1945–) - 19 patrilinear successors currently live in Benzerhof , ceilinghausen , Panker , Döse etc.
