Ludwig Eberhard von der Betten (born May 4, 1812 in Kahlenberg , † March 14, 1871 in Heidelberg ) was a Hanoverian colonel and later a Prussian major general .

Eberhard was a son of the Danish lieutenant a. D. and Mr. auf Kahlenberg, Ludwig von der Betten (1771–1812) and his wife Johanna Henriette, née Wegener (1780–1841).

Career

Blanket joined the 6th Infantry Regiment of the Hanoverian Army as a cadet on April 1, 1828 and was transferred to the 2nd Infantry Regiment as a second lieutenant at the end of May 1828 . From 1829 to 1831 he was assigned to further training at the military school and from 1834/35 to the General Staff Academy in Hanover. Subsequently, on May 1, 1835, he was appointed General Staff Officer, 2nd class. In autumn 1836 he was commanded as an observer to the maneuvers of the Prussian IV Army Corps and was active in topographical land surveying in 1837/42. At the end of March 1842, he became Premier Lieutenant and was adjutant of the 3rd Infantry Brigade from March 3, 1843 to June 14, 1848 . He then returned to service as a company commander under promotion to the captain . In this position, ceiling took part in the suppression of revolutionary unrest in Altenburg in 1848 .

From April 1 to September 30, 1849, Betten was the personal adjutant of Major General Wynecken , the commander of the mobile brigade in Schleswig , which consisted of Hanoverian and Saxon troops . During the campaign against Denmark he took part in the battles at Wilderup and Düppel , for which he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Guelph Order .

On May 27, 1850, he joined the 5th Infantry Regiment as a company commander and was promoted to lieutenant colonel by mid-May 1860 . On 27 May 1862 the first was appointed commander hunters - Battalion appointed and on June 14, 1866 Colonel promoted. During the German War he fought at the Battle of Langensalza , where the Hanoverian army won a Pyrrhic victory against the Prussians. After the lost war and the subsequent annexation of Hanover ,deck changed to the Prussian Army on April 1, 1867 and was employed as a colonel with a patent from June 14, 1866 in the 4th Posen Infantry Regiment No. 59 . During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , on July 18, 1870, blankets became the commander of the mobile 6th Infantry Brigade , with which he took part in the battle of Gravelotte and the siege of Metz as an advance guard . For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd class. During the siege he was seriously wounded on August 25, 1870 near Metz. Blankets was promoted to major general on January 18, 1871, before succumbing to his injuries on March 14, 1871 in Heidelberg.

Blankets married Ottilie von Oertzen (1830–1908) on September 22, 1852 in Neubrandenburg . The couple had several children:
