Clayton Alderfer

Clayton Paul Alderfer (born September 1, 1940 in Sellersville , Pennsylvania , † October 30, 2015 ) was an American psychologist . He is known for his ERG theory ( Existence, Relatedness and Growth ), a further development of Maslow's hierarchy of needs .

Life

Clayton P. Alderfer was an only child from the marriage of Joseph Paul (1908–1982) and Ruth Althea Alderfer, née Buck (1909–1984).

Aldfelder attended until 1958, the Liberty High School in Bethlehem , Northampton County , and completed his Bachelor -Studies of psychology in 1962 from (BSc.). In 1966 he received his Ph.D. from Yale University. PhD. He then worked at Cornell University from 1966 to 1968 and then returned to Yale University, where he worked as a research associate , lecturer and director of studies in the Department of Administrative Sciences until 1992 . In 1977 he received his diploma from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).

From 1990 to 2003 he was co-editor of the Journal of Applied and Behavioral Science (JABS) and was honored for his work there with a special award from the NTL Institute and the Douglas McGregor Award.

He has researched intergroup relationships in organizations for more than 30 years. From 1992 to 2006 he was a professor at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers University in Piscataway Township , where he headed the organizational psychology doctoral program from 1992 to 2004 . In 2006 he was named "Teacher of the Year" by Rutgers University.

In 1997, Division 3 of the American Psychological Association (APA) awarded him the Harry Levinson Award for Excellence and in 1999 the Teachers College of Columbia University the Janet Helms Award .

In the early 2000s, he founded a consulting company. Alderfer was a member of the Board of Directors of the NTL Institute from 1975 to 1978 , a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) and the American Psychological Society (APS; James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award, 1972). He was also included in the Sigma Xi (ΣΞ) and the Tau Beta Pi (ΤΒΠ).

Alderfer had been married to Charleen, nee Frankenfield, since 1962, with whom he had a daughter and a son. He died at home. His grave is in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Bethlehem.
