Clayton Conrad "Clay" Anderson (born February 23, 1959 in Omaha , Nebraska , USA ) is a former American astronaut . From June to November 2007 he completed a long-term stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). He left NASA in February 2013.

education

Clayton Anderson graduated from Ashland-Greenwood High School in Ashland , Nebraska in 1977. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from Hastings College in 1981 and a master's degree in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University in 1983 .

Astronaut activity

After graduating, Anderson joined NASA. He became a trajectory specialist at the Johnson Space Center in Houston . He was directly involved in the preparation and accompaniment of flights STS-34 in 1989 and STS-31 in 1990.

Anderson applied as an astronaut (NASA group 16), made it into the final selection on January 21, 1996, but was rejected at the first attempt. His second attempt was successful and he was introduced to the public as a future astronaut on June 5, 1998 with the 17th NASA group. Before he was assigned to a space flight, he worked on an expansion of the security system of the shuttle cockpit, was in the support crew of ISS Expedition 4 in 2001/2002 and worked as Capcom . He was also trained for outboard activities. Clayton Anderson is a radio amateur with the callsign KD5PLA.

NEEMO 5

From June 16 to 29, 2003 he was a participant in NASA's NEEMO 5 submarine laboratory . On board the Aquarius were Ryan Snow, James Talacek, Emma Hwang and NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson and Garrett Reisman . All three astronauts were later on the ISS as permanent guests or are planned as such.

ISS expedition 15

Anderson was since December 2003 flight engineer in the reserve team (double for Sunita Williams ) of the ISS expedition 14 , which started in September 2006 for the International Space Station (ISS). Anderson was then assigned as ISS flight engineer for ISS Expedition 15 in January 2005 and started on June 8, 2007 with the STS-117 shuttle mission to the space station. He worked and lived on the ISS for five months before returning on the STS-120 on November 7, 2007.

STS-131

On December 5, 2008, Anderson was named a Mission Specialist for the STS-131 mission . The take-off took place on April 5, 2010, the landing on April 20, 2010. Together with Richard Mastracchio , he carried out three space missions .

Private

Anderson is married with two children.
