In order to be able to work in the school service, Pagenstert then also studied classical philology at the universities of Berlin and Münster . In 1891 he received his doctorate in Münster and passed the first state examination in 1892. As a result, he worked as a pastor and in school service. In 1887 he became chaplain at the private chapel at Hülshoff Castle , in 1889 vicar in Roxel near Münster and in 1895 cathedral vicar. From 1892 he was provisional director of the Higher Citizens' School in Hüls (Krefeld) . After that he was again as chaplain at St. Matthias in Berlin , district Schöneberg and at the same time taught at the Charlottenschule Berlin . 1894–1895 he taught at the Episcopal College in Gaesdonck and then from autumn 1896 was a teacher at the Antonianum grammar school in Vechta. In 1897 he was appointed senior teacher and in 1908 finally professor. Since 1898 Pagenstert was also the chaplain of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady in Marienhein in Vechta. On November 16, 1916, he received the Friedrich-August-Kreuz II. Class for his services and in 1922 he was appointed to the faculty. In 1924 he retired.

Regional historical research

Early on, Pagenstert also turned to the history of the Oldenburger Münsterland and initially published two smaller writings on Vechta local history and the history of the Grand Duchy , intended for teaching purposes . Several articles in the Oldenburg yearbook followed . Pagenstert then devoted himself to investigations into court and family history in the Oldenburg Münsterland. His main focus was on maintaining traditional values, religion and customs in rural areas. His numerous articles in the local supplements of various regional newspapers, with which he contributed to the popularization of regional history, also served this purpose.
