Clemens von Sonntag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clemens von Sonntag (born May 4, 1936 in Stuttgart , † April 5, 2013 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) was a German chemist .

Life

Clemens von Sonntag studied chemistry in Heidelberg , Vienna and Karlsruhe and then did his doctorate in 1964 at the Karlsruhe nuclear research center . After a postdoctoral period with Frederick Sydney Dainton at the University of Leeds, England, he became group leader at the Institute for Radiation Chemistry at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center. In 1970 he completed his habilitation at the University of Karlsruhe and was appointed adjunct professor in 1977.

He was married to the painter Ilsabe von Sonntag. They have three sons together.

From 1970 Clemens von Sonntag was group leader at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Coal Research, Radiation Chemistry Department, later renamed the MPI for Radiation Chemistry, Mülheim an der Ruhr, now the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion . The Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification , he accompanied a founding member since 1992. Since his retirement in 2001 he was responsible for undergraduate and graduate students at the universities of Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen.

Scientific work

Already in Karlsruhe, Dietrich Schulte-Frohlinde began the first work on the radiation chemistry of DNA, which should become a research focus in Mülheim. In 1975, essential aspects of the radical-induced DNA chain break were elucidated. Towards the end of the 20th century it turned out that the biological effects of ionizing radiation are dominated by biological processes. Building on the knowledge of the radiation chemistry of water, work on drinking water and later wastewater treatment with UV , hydrogen peroxide and ozone followed . As of 2005 he has written 394 publications. In the estate there was a list of his publications with 424 entries.

Awards

  • JJ Weiss Medal of the British Association for Radiation Research together with Dietrich Schulte-Frohlinde (1984)
  • Maria Sklodowska-Curie Medal of the Polish Society for Radiation Research (2000)
