Clipper Deutsches Jugendwerk zur See (DJS) is a registered association that brings people interested in sailing - especially young people - closer to life on board traditional sailing ships and the tasks and responsibilities associated with them.

Club history

The association was founded in 1973, making it the oldest and, with around 5,000 members, the largest organization of its kind in Germany. It is sailed according to traditional seamanship , as it used to be experienced on large sailing ships. The regular volunteer crew of the ships consists of the captain , two or three helmsmen and machinist , all three of whom have a certificate of competence , and the cook. The fellow sailors ("trainees") are divided into guards and take on the tasks that arise on board such as setting and lifting sails, rowing ("steering"), but also backshank (kitchen service) etc .; Sailors can register individually or in groups.

In the season from April / May to October, the association offers its members various cruises, usually one or two weeks, in the Baltic or North Sea area on its four ships . In the winter months, trips on the two-masted schooner Johann Smidt are usually also offered, initially in southern Europe (western Mediterranean, Canary Islands) and since 2007 in the Caribbean ; for the round trip to the Caribbean, the ship is used as the “sailing classroom” (see below) of the High Seas High School .

In 2014 Clipper and his ship Johann Smidt were named “Sail Training Organization of the Year” by the international organization Sail Training International ; There was recognition for “excellence, innovation and best practice in sail training for young people”.

Winter trips and the sailing classroom

For years, a ship of the association has been used for winter trips in warmer regions, initially every second winter and now every year. From 1979/1980 Seute Deern went to the Canary Islands, in 1990 Johann Smidt took over this role and also visited the Balearic Islands several times. Since 2007/2008, Johann Smidt has been used as a “sailing classroom” at the High Seas High School every winter half-year : from around October to the following May, around 25 students sail from Hamburg to the Caribbean and back with teachers and volunteer crews. During the several weeks of shore excursions for students and teachers in the Caribbean, the ship is used as usual for club operations.
