The Johann Smidt - originally Eendracht , today colloquially also Johnny - is a two-masted gaff schooner that was built in 1974 in the Netherlands for youth travel.

Today the ship sails under the flag of the Club Clipper DJS with paying guests, especially the Baltic Sea. One focus is on rides for young people, especially through participation in STAG regattas . For many years the Johann Smidt spent every second winter in the waters around the Balearic and Canary Islands . Since 2007 she has been traveling regularly to the Caribbean over the winter with the High Seas High School project .

A very detailed model of the ship, 1.6 meters long and 1.6 meters high, was first exhibited in the lobby of a Dutch hotel and has been owned by the Clipper DJS association since 2000 . After a major overhaul of the model (270 working hours) in 2000 and 2001, Johann Smidt presents it as of June 2000.

Ship history

The Johann Smidt was built in steel in 1974 under the name "Eendracht" ( ndl. For "Eintracht") at the Cammenga shipyard in Amsterdam (Netherlands) for use for trips with young people. Traditional aspects of sailing ship building were combined with modern techniques from yacht building. This is most noticeable to this day in the rigging , which includes both a traditional gaff sail and exchangeable headsail . The ship is partially equipped with winches .

During its time under a Dutch owner (owner) Stichting 'Het Zeilend Zeeschip , the ship and young crews took part in several regattas of the Sail Training Association (STA). It crossed the Atlantic Ocean several times .

In 1989 the ship for 2.4 million was  DM by the association Clipper DJS - Clipper German Youth Office at sea e. V. - who was looking for a fourth ship for his self-imposed task of teaching young people about traditional sailing. The purchase condition was the renaming of the ship, because the name should be passed on to today's Eendracht II . Since the purchase was supported by donors from Bremen , the ship was christened on October 6, 1989 at Bollhörnkai in Kiel at the request of the donors in the name of the mayor of Bremen and founder of Bremerhaven, Johann Smidt (19th century).

Since then, the Johann Smidt has been used by the Clipper DJS association for sailing trips with paying - especially young - guests. Since 1990 the ship sails every two years for several months before and in winter in the waters around the Canary Islands and - since 1994 - also around the Balearic Islands . Otherwise, the Johann Smidt is mainly used on the Baltic Sea from April to October, with the focus on Germany and Denmark, for example, already extended to Tallinn ( Estonia ), Riga ( Latvia ) and Turku ( Finland ).

Furthermore, the Johann Smidt sails at many Sailing events Select such as Tall Ships 'Races (formerly Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races with). Among other things, she won the second stage of the STA regatta from Tallinn to Gdynia ( Polish: Gdynia, Poland) in 1992 and thus won the challenge cup Florence Cup for the overall victory in her size class (class B: smaller traditional ships). A year later she again achieved first place on a STA regatta stage, this time from Larvik (Norway) to Esbjerg (Denmark). In 1998, the Johann Smidt achieved second place in its size class in the Windjammer regatta from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to San Sebastián de La Gomera (Canary Islands) under captain Hans Rahnenführer, one year later on the stage of the STA regatta from Greenock (Scotland ) again took first place after Ålborg (Denmark). In 2000 the Johann Smidt even won both stages ( Danzig - Helsinki and Stockholm - Flensburg with Kap. K. Schade) and thus again the Florence Cup for the overall victory in its size class. As part of the Tall Ships' Races, the crews of the ship also took part in the crew swap between the regatta stages in order to promote international understanding - in 2004, three cadets from the Russian training ship Mir were on the Johann Smidt.

Over the years the Johann Smidt was equipped with modern navigation instruments including computers. The gyrocompass , with which the ship was equipped for many years, required the constant use of a small auxiliary engine, even under sail. After a stormy voyage on the Atlantic in autumn 2003, major work was carried out on the ship in winter 2003/2004. In addition, minor maintenance work on the ship took place regularly in winter.

From 2007/2008 to 2014/2015, the High Seas High School of the Hermann Lietz School Spiekeroog was organized on the Johann Smidt : pupils of the 11th high school class transferred their lessons to the ship and sailed from Germany to the Caribbean around - interrupted by Practical regional studies during several visits to the country - arriving back in Germany six to seven months later. In 2008/2009 the Johann Smidt was supported by the Dutch brig Astrid . During the students' stay on land, the ship was also used in regular club operations in the Caribbean. In the summer half of the year, the gaff schooner is still in use for trips in the North and Baltic Seas, which are open to all those interested in sailing.

Starting in 2016, the Johann Smidt is expected to alternate annually with the brig Roald Amundsen for the High Seas High School .

Since 2015 the Johann Smidt has been equipped with Breitfock and Breitfock rah again .

Individual evidence

  1. a b The current owner, Clipper DJS, describes the design or the rig of the ship as the "Gaffel Topsegelschoner" [[sic]]] or Topsegelschoner-Rigg. Although the Johann Smidt indeed a topsail above their schooner sails can drive such a ship is generally called a gaff schooner while the term topsail schooner to savers with at least one square sail is reserved.
